Electronic Cluster

The electronic instrument cluster contains the digital speedometer, graduated tachometer, and odometer. The RH side of the instrument cluster contains the graduated fuel level and engine coolant temperature gauges. The LH side of the instrument cluster displays the message center information. The instrument cluster receives the information hardwired. Each time the ignition switch is turned from OFF to ON, the instrument cluster illuminates all digital display segments for several seconds, then returns to normal. The following instrument cluster warning indicators will also prove out:
^ charging.
^ safety belt.
^ BRAKE.
^ low oil pressure.
^ SERVICE ENGINE SOON.
^ O/DOFF.
^ AIR BAG
^ ABS

Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge.
The engine coolant temperature gauge indicates the engine coolant temperature based on the operating resistance range from the engine coolant temperature sender. If the engine coolant temperature is low, the sender resistance is high. If the engine coolant temperature is high, the sender resistance is low. The engine coolant temperature sender resistance range should be between 60 ohms and 219 ohms.

Fuel Gauge
The fuel gauge receives the fuel level resistance from the fuel level sensor, part of the fuel pump module. To prevent the fuel gauge pointer from fluctuating as a result of excessive movement of fuel in the fuel tank, the fuel indicator module provides a delay to the fuel gauge. If the fuel level is low, the resistance in the fuel level sensor will be low, causing the gauge to indicate empty (E). When the fuel level is high, the resistance in the fuel level sensor is high, and the gauge indicates full (F). The electronic instrument cluster turns on the low fuel indicator when the fuel gauge shows approximately one-eighth tank of fuel remaining.

Speedometer/Odometer
The speedometer and odometer provides speed information based on a speed/distance pulse signal from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). The VSS is mounted on the speedometer driven gear, in the transaxle. The VSS will send eight pulse signals to the instrument cluster per one rotation of the speedometer driven gear. The odometer mileage and the two trip odometers are stored in the Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) of the electronic instrument cluster. If the odometer mileage cannot be retrieved from the NVM, the word Error will be displayed in the odometer display.

Tachometer
Engine speed (rpm) signal is generated by the camshaft position sensor and is sent to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The PCM transforms the camshaft position sensor signal into a digital signal, which is sent to the tachometer.

WARNING INDICATORS

Air Bag
The air bag warning indicator is controlled by the air bag diagnostic monitor. When starting the vehicle, the air bag warning indicator illuminates and remains lit for six seconds. The indicator only illuminates after starting the vehicle if a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) malfunction is detected.

Anti-Lock Brakes
The anti-lock brake warning indicator illuminates when the anti-lock brake control module detects a fault in the system.

Brake System
The brake system warning indicator has a dual function. It illuminates when the parking brake is applied or when a low brake fluid condition exists in the brake master cylinder reservoir. The brake system warning indicator will illuminate when there is a pressure differential between the front and rear brake hydraulic systems.

Charging System
The charging system indicator illuminates whenever the generator output is insufficient to maintain battery state of charge or if the generator output is too high. Under normal operation, the indicator goes out after the engine is started and the charging system begins to operate.

Door Ajar
The door ajar warning indicator is controlled by the Smart Entry Control (SEC)/timer module. The SEC/timer module receives door status from each door ajar switch. If a door is open, the SEC will ground the door ajar circuit, illuminating the door ajar indicator.

Low Fuel
The low fuel warning indicator is controlled by the fuel indicator module, and warns the driver when the fuel level is one- eighth or lower in the tank.

Low Oil Pressure
The low oil pressure indicator is hardwired to the engine low oil pressure switch. The indicator will prove out with the ignition switch in the ON position. The low oil pressure switch is normally closed. As the engine oil pressure builds up to above 41 kPa (6 psi) the switch opens, turning the low oil pressure indicator off.

Low Washer Fluid
The low washer fluid indicator illuminates if the low washer fluid level switch is low. The washer fluid level switch is open if the fluid level is high. The low washer fluid indicator does not prove out.

Overdrive Off
The overdrive off (O/D OFF) indicator has dual functions. The overdrive off indicator will illuminate when the overdrive is turned off. The overdrive off indicator will also illuminate if a fault is detected in the automatic transaxle.

Speed Control
The speed control (CRUISE) indicator is controlled by the speed control actuator module and hardwired to the instrument cluster.

Safety Belt
The safety belt indicator is directly hardwired to the safety belt buckle switch. The safety belt indicator illuminates when the safety belt not buckled, closing the safety belt buckle switch.

LH and RH Turn, Hazard
The right or left turn indicators illuminate intermittently relative to the position of the multifunction switch. The turn indicators will both flash when the hazard warning flasher switch is activated.

High Beam
The high beam indicator receives its signal hardwired from the multifunction switch. The high beam indicator illuminates When the headlamps are ON and in the high beams position or the flash-to-pass is activated.
