Deactivation Procedures

WARNING: THE AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS MUST BE REMOVED AND THE AIR BAG MODULES RECONNECTED WHEN THE SYSTEM IS REACTIVATED TO AVOID NON-DEPLOYMENT IN A COLLISION, RESULTING IN POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.

NOTE: After diagnosing/repairing a seat system, the restraint system diagnostic tools must be removed before operating the vehicle over the road.

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

WARNING: TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE REPAIRING OR INSTALLING ANY NEW AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) COMPONENTS. TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE AND WAIT THREE MINUTES. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT AUXILIARY BATTERIES AND POWER SUPPLIES (IF SO EQUIPPED).

2. Wait three minutes. This is the time required for the air bag diagnostic monitor backup power supply to deplete its stored energy.
3. Remove the cover panel on the lower portion of the steering wheel to gain access to the air bag module connector.

WARNING:
^ CARRY A LIVE AIR BAG MODULE WITH THE AIR BAG AND TRIM COVER POINTED AWAY FROM THE BODY. THIS WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.
^ DO NOT SET A LIVE AIR BAG MODULE DOWN WITH THE TRIM COVER FACE DOWN.

4. Disconnect the driver air bag module connector and connect a restraint system diagnostic tool 501-026 to the vehicle harness. Remove the driver air bag module.
5. Remove the passenger air bag module from the vehicle.

WARNING:
^ CARRY A LIVE AIR BAG MODULE WITH THE AIR BAG TRIM COVER POINTED AWAY FROM YOUR BODY. THIS WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.
^ DO NOT SET A LIVE AIR BAG MODULE DOWN WITH THE TRIM COVER FACE DOWN.

6. Connect a Restraint System Diagnostic Tool (501-076) to the vehicle harness.
7. Reconnect the battery ground cable.
