Diagnostic Test Modes

73III Automotive Meter:

SPECIAL TOOL(S)

The symptom chart can be used to help locate the Air Bag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) concerns if no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are retrieved and the listed symptoms are observed. Fault codes are read by using the air bag warning indicator in the instrument cluster.

Diagnostic Test Modes
Two mode options are available under the diagnostic test modes:
^ user mode.
^ diagnosis mode.

The LH front door courtesy lamp switch and ignition switch are used to alternate from one mode to another.

User Mode
When the air bag system is functioning normally, the air bag warning indicator will illuminate for approximately seven seconds when the ignition switch is placed in the ON or START positions, it then will go out.

If a fault occurs in the air bag system, the air bag indicator will illuminate for approximately seven seconds when the ignition switch is placed in the ON or START positions, then begin to flash continuously. To determine the specific fault, enter the Diagnosis Mode.

If the air bag module has been deployed or a fault in the air bag diagnostic monitor exists, the air bag warning indicator will illuminate continuously while the ignition switch is in the ON position. Refer to the Continuous Air Bag Warning Indicator Pinpoint Test when this occurs. Test A: Air Bag Warning Indicator Is Illuminated Continuously

Diagnosis Mode
The Diagnosis Mode will display any fault that is present in the system. To enter the Diagnosis Mode:
^ Place the ignition switch in the ON position.
^ Press and release the LH front door courtesy lamp switch more than five times within seven seconds after the ignition switch has been placed in the ON position.

If the air bag diagnostic monitor detects a current fault, the fault code will be displayed with a flashing sequence of the air bag indicator. The fault code consists of:
^ A start signal to indicate the beginning of a fault code.
^ A number of flashes indicating the particular code that has been set.

The start signal:
^ begins with two seconds off.
^ two seconds on.
^ off.
^ one second on.
^ two seconds off.

Following the start signal, if any current fault is detected, the fault code will be displayed. The fault code:
^ is a series of half second flashes of the air bag indicator.
^ is followed by the start signal.

The start signal and the code for any current fault will repeat until the ignition is switched off or the air bag diagnostic monitor is switched to the user mode.
