Disassembly





1. Remove the reverse clutch snap ring.





2. Remove the reverse clutch pack assembly.
1 Remove the reverse clutch pressure plate.
2 Remove the clutch pack.
3 Remove the reverse clutch dish plates.





3. Remove the reverse clutch snap ring.
1 Using the special tool, compress the reverse clutch drum spring.
2 Remove the snap ring.





4. Remove the reverse clutch spring.
1 Remove the reverse clutch spring retainer.
2 Remove the reverse clutch spring.





5. Remove the reverse clutch piston.
1 Position the reverse clutch drum on the oil PUMP-
2 Apply compressed air to the fluid passage.
3 Remove the piston.





6. Apply compressed air to the check ball openings on the return spring side of the reverse clutch piston. Air should pass through the openings.





7. Apply compressed air to the check ball openings on the side opposite the return spring on the reverse clutch piston. No air should pass through the openings.





8. Remove the reverse clutch piston seals.





9. Measure the reverse clutch plate facings. The standard thickness is 1.6 mm (0.063 inch). If the facing is less than 1.4 mm (0.055 inch), replace all of the reverse clutch plate facings.





10. Measure the thickness of the reverse clutch dish plates. The plates should measure 3.08 mm (0.121 inch). If the plates are out of specification, install a new reverse clutch dish plates.

Assembly





1. NOTE: Verify correct seal orientation. Install the reverse clutch piston seals. Apply Motorcraft MERCON Multipurpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON.





2. NOTE: The piston can be rotated to ease installation into the clutch drum.

Install the reverse clutch piston.
1 Apply Motorcraft MERCON Multipurpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON to the reverse clutch drum. MERCON(R) Automatic Trqansmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON(R) V as a service fluid, as per TSB 06-14-4.
2 Install the reverse clutch piston.





3. Install the reverse clutch spring retainer.
1 Install the reverse clutch spring.
2 Install the retainer.





4. Install the reverse clutch snap ring.
1 Using the special tool, compress the reverse clutch drum spring.
2 Install the snap ring.





5. NOTE: Do not align the clutch dish plates engagement teeth when installing.

Install the reverse clutch pack assembly.
1 Install the reverse clutch dish plates with the outer edges of the dish plates touching each other.
2 Install the clutch pack.
3 Install the reverse clutch pressure plate.

6. Install the reverse clutch snap ring.
7. Measure the clearance between the reverse clutch snap ring and the reverse clutch pressure plate. The standard clearance is 0.5 mm (0.020 inch) - 0.8 mm (0.031 inch). If the clearance is greater than 1.2 mm (0.047 inch), select and install the correct pressure plate from the chart below.

8. Check the reverse clutch for operation.
^ Apply compressed air to the fluid passage and check for clutch engagement.
