Special Tool(s)

All vehicles

1. NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms can occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The customer needs to be notified that they can experience slightly different upshifts either (soft or firm) and that this is a temporary condition and will eventually return to normal operating condition.

Disconnect the battery ground cable.





2. Remove the radiator appearance cover.





3. Remove the LH upper fan shroud bolt. if equipped, remove and discard the assembly screw(s).





4. Remove the upper fan shroud bolts.
1 Remove the RH bolt.
2 If equipped, remove and discard the RH assembly screw(s).
3 If equipped, disconnect the A/C line retainer.
4 Remove the fan shroud.

4.0L engine
5. Remove the exhaust manifold to Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve tube.





6. Tap the hole in the RH cylinder head in order to install the lifting hook.
^ Use a 10 x 1.50 mm (0.06 inch) tap to tap the hole.





7. Install the special tool in the previously tapped hole.





8. Install the special tools.





9. Install the engine lifting hook.





4.6L engine
10. Remove the engine appearance cover.





11. Remove the battery ground cable and the bracket.
^ Position the bracket and wire harness out of the way.





12. Install the special tool.





13. Install the special tools.

All vehicles
14. Raise and support the vehicle.
15. If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid. Install the drain plug when finished.





16. Remove the two RH heat shield bolts and position the shield aside.





17. NOTE: The LH side is shown, RH side is similar.

Disconnect the two heated oxygen sensor electrical connectors.





18. NOTE: The LH side is shown, RH side is similar.

Disconnect the two catalyst monitor sensor electrical connectors.





19. Remove the RH heat shield bolts.





20. Remove the RH heat shield bolt and remove the heat shield.





21. Remove the LH heat shield bolt.





22. Remove the two nuts and the plastic shield on the right side of the crossmember near the fuel tank.





23. NOTE: The RH side is shown, LH side is similar.

Remove the four upper crossmember bolts (two on each side).





24. Remove the bolts, springs, flag nuts and separate the muffler from the converter.
^ Discard the gasket.
^ Discard the flag nuts.





25. NOTE: the LH side is shown, RH side is similar.

Remove the four converter-to-manifold nuts. Remove the jackstand and lower the converter assembly with the heat shield.

26. WARNING: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety chain. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.

Install a suitable jack under the transmission.





27. Remove the RH side crossmember bolts.





28. Remove the LH side crossmember bolts.





29. Remove the two bolts on the bracket and position aside.





30. Remove the transmission support insulator nuts and remove the crossmember.





31. NOTE: This step may require an assistant.

Remove the transmission mounted exhaust hanger and the 3-way converter assembly.
1 Remove the bolt and 3-way system.
2 If required, remove the other bolt and the mount.





32. Remove the shift cable and bracket and position out of PARK.
1 Disconnect the cable from the lever.
2 Position the manual lever out of PARK.
3 Remove the bolts and the shift cable and bracket and position aside.





33. Remove the bolts. 1 Mark the location of the flange. 2 Remove the bolts.





34. NOTE: Do not use a hammer.

Remove the driveshaft from the flange using a pry bar.





4.6L engine
35. Remove the electrical connector cover.





36. Remove the starter wire and positive battery cable.





37. Remove the starter motor bolts and starter.





38. Remove the flexplate cover.





39. Remove the access cover.





40. NOTE: Make an identifying mark on the nut, stud and flexplate to allow for correct installation.

Remove the four torque converter nuts.





4.0L engine
41. Remove the starter and position aside.





42. NOTE: Make an identifying mark on the nut, stud and flexplate to allow for correct installation.

Remove the four torque converter nuts.





43. Remove the lower transmission retaining bolts.

All vehicles
44. Lower the transmission to gain access to the sensor connectors and the transmission bolts.





45. Disconnect the RH catalyst monitor connector and the fuel lines from the bracket.





46. Disconnect the RH heated oxygen sensor from the transmission.





47. Disconnect the LH heated oxygen sensor and the harness clip from the transmission.





48. Disconnect the LH catalyst monitor connector from the transmission.





49. Move the rubber boot back to gain access to the connector.





50. Disconnect the digital Transmission Range (TR) sensor connector.





51. Disconnect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor, Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor and Intermediate Shaft Speed (ISS) sensor electrical connectors.





52. NOTE: Clean the area around connector to prevent contamination of the solenoid body connector.

Remove the screw from the solenoid body connector and disconnect the connector.





53. Disconnect the harness retainers.





All vehicles

54. CAUTION: Do not damage the cooler tubes.

Disconnect the transmission cooler tubes.





4.6L engine
55. Remove the front crossmember.





56. Remove the seven engine-to-transmission retaining bolts.





4.0L engine
57. Remove the six engine-to-transmission retaining bolts and position the fuel line bracket out of the way.

All vehicles
58. Lower the transmission assembly from the vehicle.





59. Install the special tool.
60. If contamination is present, backflush and clean the transmission fluid cooler.
