Compressor HVAC: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

CAUTION: If installing a new air conditioning compressor due to an internal failure of the old unit, carry out the following procedures to remove contamination from the air conditioning system.
- If A/C flushing equipment is available, carry out air conditioning system flushing prior to installing a new air conditioning compressor.
- If A/C flushing equipment is not available, carry out air conditioning system filtering after a new air conditioning compressor has been installed.
- Install a new evaporator core orifice as directed by the A/C flushing or filtering procedure.
- Install a new suction accumulator as directed by the A/C flushing or filtering procedure.

NOTE: Installation of a new suction accumulator is not required when repairing the air conditioning system except when there is physical evidence of system contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the suction accumulator.

1. If air conditioning system flushing has not been carried out, recover the refrigerant.
2. Remove the drive belt from the A/C compressor pulley.
3. Raise the vehicle.
4. Remove the RH front wheel and tire assembly.

5. Disconnect the electrical connector.

6. Position aside the crankshaft position sensor wiring harness.
1 Disconnect the electrical connector.
2 Detach the wiring harness retaining clips.
3 Position the wiring harness aside.

7. Detach the A/C compressor clutch field coil wiring harness retaining clip and position the wiring harness aside.

8. Disconnect the compressor manifold and tube assembly from the A/C compressor.
1 Loosen the bolt.
2 Disconnect the compressor manifold and tube assembly.

NOTE: The compressor manifold and tube bolt can be accessed through the opening in the RH front wheel well.

9. Remove the nuts.

10. Remove the mounting stud.

11. Loosen the mounting stud.

NOTE: The mounting stud must be removed with the A/C compressor.

12. Remove the mounting stud.

13. Remove the remaining mounting stud and the A/C compressor.
- Discard the O-ring seals.

INSTALLATION
1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- If a new A/C compressor is to be installed, the clutch plate, A/C compressor pulley and bearing assembly, and clutch field coil must be transferred from the old unit.
- If refrigerant system filtering is not to be carried out, lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil or equivalent.
- Install new O-ring seals lubricated in clean PAG oil or equivalent.

2. If refrigerant system filtering is not to be carried out, evacuate, leak test, and charge the refrigerant system.
