Safety Canopy Module
SAFETY CANOPY MODULERemoval
WARNING:
- Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an air bag module. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
- To reduce the risk of personal injury from an accidental deployment, always carry or place a live side air curtain/safety canopy module with the air curtain/safety canopy and tear seam pointed away from your body. Failure to do so can result in personal injury in the event of a side air curtain/safety canopy module deployment.
- After deployment, the surface of the air curtain/safety canopy can contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.
- Never probe the connector on the side air curtain/safety canopy module. Doing so can result in side air curtain/safety canopy deployment which can result in personal injury.
- Anytime the side air curtain/safety canopy has deployed, the headliner, and all A, B, and C pillar upper trim panels and attaching hardware must be replaced along with any other damaged components and hardware. Failure to do so can result in personal injury in the event of a side air curtain/safety canopy deployment.
- Vehicles equipped with side air curtain/safety canopy modules require a specific headliner. When installing a new headliner on a vehicle equipped with side air curtain/safety canopy modules, make sure a headliner for side air curtain/safety canopy modules is being used. The word "AIRBAG" will appear on the headliner where it meets each B and C-pillar trim panel. Failure to do so can result in personal injury in the event of a side air curtain/safety canopy module deployment.
- Before installing a side air curtain/safety canopy module, inspect the roofline for any damage. If necessary, the sheet metal must be reworked to its original condition and structural integrity. All damaged fasteners must be replaced and any foreign objects removed. Failure to do so may result in personal injury in the event of a side air curtain/safety canopy deployment.
- Inspect the side air curtain/safety canopy before installation. If the side air curtain/safety canopy is damaged or the cover has separated or curtain/canopy material has been exposed, a new side air curtain/safety canopy module must be installed. Do not attempt to repair the side air curtain/safety canopy module. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury in the event of a side air curtain/safety canopy module deployment.
- To reduce the risk of injury, do not obstruct or place objects in the deployment path of the side air curtain/safety canopy module. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury in the event of a side air curtain/safety canopy module deployment.
- Never put any type of fastener or tie strap around any part of the side air curtain/safety canopy module or interior trim panel. This will prevent the side air curtain/safety canopy module from deploying correctly. Failure to do so can result in personal injury in the event of a side air curtain/safety canopy module deployment.
- To reduce the risk of personal injury, do not use any memory saver devices.
NOTE:
- When a side air curtain module needs to be installed and the replacement part is a safety canopy, then both side air curtain modules must be replaced with safety canopy modules. A vehicle must not have a side air curtain module and a safety canopy module present on the same vehicle.
- The air bag warning lamp illuminates when the RCM fuse is removed and the ignition switch is ON. This is normal operation and does not indicate a supplemental restraint system (SRS) fault.
- The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
- There are two different C-pillar trim panels. Those built for vehicles with side air curtain modules and those built for vehicles with safety canopy modules. If replacing a side air curtain module on a vehicle built up to 03/2002 with a safety canopy module, a C-pillar trim panel that is safety canopy module compatible must be used.
- Repair is made by installing a new part only. If the new part does not correct the condition, install the original part and perform the diagnostic procedure again.
- The driver side is shown, passenger side is similar.
All vehicles
1. Depower the system.
2. Remove the headliner.
3. Remove the headliner.
Vehicles with a moonroof
4. Release the moonroof drain tube pin-type retainers.
Vehicles with a safety canopy
5. Remove the bolts and separate the rear tether bracket assembly from the C-pillar.
All vehicles
6. CAUTION: Inspect the rivet nut and A-pillar sheet metal for damage. Install a new rivet nut if necessary.
Remove the bolt and bracket for the tether cord from the A-pillar.
7. NOTE: If not installing a new side air curtain/safety canopy module, the pin-type retainer can remain installed.
Remove the pin-type retainer and tether cord from the A-pillar.
8. Disconnect the side air curtain/safety canopy electrical connector.
9. Remove the side air curtain/safety canopy wire harness and electrical connector pin-type retainers at the C-pillar.
10. Remove the bolts.
11. Remove the bolts.
12. Remove the bolts.
13. Push the retainers together and separate the rear ramp from the sheet metal.
14. Remove the side air curtain/safety canopy.
1. Release the side air curtain/safety canopy plastic cover from the front ramp lower retainers.
2. Rotate the side air curtain/safety canopy up, releasing the side air curtain/safety canopy from the front ramp upper retainers.
3. Remove the side air curtain/safety canopy.
15. Push the retainers together and separate the front ramp from the roof.
Installation
Reinstallation of the same side air curtain/safety canopy
1. WARNING: Before installing the side air curtain/safety canopy module, inspect the roofline for any damage. If necessary, the sheet metal must be reworked to its original condition and structural integrity. All damaged fasteners must be replaced and any foreign objects removed. Failure to do so may result in personal injury in the event of a side air curtain/safety canopy deployment.

If replacing a side air curtain module on a vehicle built up to 03/2002 with a safety canopy module, a C-pillar trim panel that is safety canopy module compatible must be used.
- Make sure the battery negative cable is still disconnected before continuing with the installation portion of this procedure.
Position the side air curtain/safety canopy back into the rear ramp.
1. Position the ramp upper retainers around the safety canopy, making sure the retainers are in the safety canopy shell locator cutouts.
2. The safety canopy shell must be located behind the ramp tabs.
All vehicles
2. With the side air curtain/safety canopy module positioned in the vehicle as shown, angle the rear of the side air curtain/safety canopy module to the sheet metal, so that the deployment canister can be inserted into the sheet metal opening.
3. Push in on the front and rear ramps engaging the ramp retainers to the sheet metal. An audible click should be heard, indicating that the retainers have engaged into the sheet metal.
