DEACTIVATION
WARNING:
^ ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN REPAIRING AN AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) VEHICLE AND WHEN HANDLING AN AIR BAG MODULE. THIS WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.
^ THE BELT AND BUCKLE ASSEMBLY PRETENSIONER IS A PYROTECHNIC DEVICE. ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN REPAIRING AN AIR BAG EQUIPPED VEHICLE AND WHEN HANDLING A BELT AND BUCKLE ASSEMBLY PRETENSIONER.
^ AFTER DEPLOYMENT, THE AIR BAG SURFACE CAN CONTAIN DEPOSITS OF SODIUM HYDROXIDE, A PRODUCT OF THE GAS GENERANT COMBUSTION THAT IS IRRITATING TO THE SKIN. WASH YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP AND WATER AFTERWARDS.
^ NEVER PROBE THE CONNECTORS ON THE AIR BAG MODULE. DOING SO CAN RESULT IN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, WHICH CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
^ THE BELT AND BUCKLE ASSEMBLY PRETENSIONER IS A PYROTECHNIC DEVICE. NEVER PROBE THE CONNECTORS ON THE BELT AND BUCKLE ASSEMBLY PRETENSIONERS. DOING SO COULD RESULT IN BELT AND BUCKLE ASSEMBLY PRETENSIONER OR AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT AND COULD RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
^ AIR BAG MODULES WITH DISCOLORED OR DAMAGED TRIM COVERS MUST BE INSTALLED NEW, NOT REPAINTED.
^ THE RESTRAINT SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC TOOL IS FOR RESTRAINT SYSTEM SERVICE ONLY. REMOVE FROM VEHICLE PRIOR TO ROAD USE. FAILURE TO REMOVE COULD RESULT IN INJURY AND POSSIBLE VIOLATION OF VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS.
NOTE:
^ After diagnosing/repairing a seat system, the restraint system diagnostic tools must be removed before operating the vehicle over the road.
^ No restraint system diagnostic tool is available for the safety belt buckle pretensioners. If the ignition switch is set to the RUN or START position with the pretensioner electrical connector disconnected, the DTC(s) for an open circuit will be activated.
^ The left-hand drive is shown, the right-hand drive is similar.
All vehicles
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.
WARNING: TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE REPAIRING OR REPLACING ANY FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) COMPONENTS AND BEFORE SERVICING, REPLACING, ADJUSTING OR STRIKING COMPONENTS NEAR THE FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS, SUCH AS DOORS, INSTRUMENT PANEL, CONSOLE, DOOR LATCHES, STRIKERS, SEATS AND HOOD LATCHES.
PLEASE REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE COMPONENT OR SYSTEM TO DETERMINE LOCATION OF THE FRONT AIR BAG SENSORS.
THE SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS ARE LOCATED AT OR NEAR THE BASE OF THE B-PILLAR.
TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE AND WAIT AT LEAST ONE MINUTE. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT AUXILIARY BATTERIES AND POWER SUPPLIES (IF EQUIPPED).
2. Remove the two steering wheel back cover plugs (one shown).
3. Remove the two left-hand air bag module bolts (one shown).
4. Remove the driver air bag module.
1 Slide and disengage the driver air bag module electrical connector locking clip.
2 Push in on the two release tabs and disconnect the driver air bag module electrical connector.
3 Disconnect the horn switch electrical connector.
4 Remove the driver air bag module.
5. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the clockspring electrical connector at the top of the steering column.
6. Push in on the glove compartment sides, releasing the stops and lowering it out of the way.
7. Through the glove compartment opening, release the tab and disconnect the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
8. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the passenger air bag electrical connector.
Vehicles without side air curtains
9. If the side air curtain bridge resistor is removed, an open circuit fault will be generated by the Restraints Control Module (RCM).
If a restraint system diagnostic tool is installed at the side air curtain electrical connector, a low resistance fault will be generated by the RCM.
CAUTION: Do not deactivate the side air curtain module circuit by removing the side air curtain bridge resistor from the side air curtain electrical connector.
Vehicles with side air curtains
10. Lower the rear right-hand door opening weatherstrip.
11. Remove the right-hand side C-pillar trim panel clips.
12. Position the right-hand side C-pillar trim panel out of the way.
^ Pull the lower portion of the trim panel outward to release the lower tab.
^ Pull the trim panel downward to release the upper tabs. Slide the trim panel down the safety belt, out of the way.
13. Disconnect the right-hand side air curtain electrical connector.
14. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the right-hand side air curtain electrical connector.
15. Lower the rear left-hand door opening weatherstrip.
16. Remove the left-hand side C-pillar trim panel clips.

18. Disconnect the left-hand side air curtain electrical connector.
19. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the left-hand side air curtain electrical connector.
All vehicles
20. Connect the battery ground cable.
21. With the restraint system diagnostic tools installed at all deployable devices, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS). Prove Out Procedure
22. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.
REACTIVATION
WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, AND NOTES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE DEACTIVATION PROCEDURE.
