ELECTRICAL - CENTRAL SECURITY MODULE (CSM) SERVICE TIPS
FORD:
2002 EXPLORER
MERCURY:
2002 MOUNTAINEER
ISSUE
The Central Security Module (CSM) is used in the 2002 model year Explorer and Mountaineer vehicles built prior to 03/04/2002 only. On vehicles built after that date, functions previously performed by the CSM were incorporated into the BSM (Body Security Module). This article will assist the technician in diagnosing the door lock system by revealing some normal operating characteristics and features of the system.
ACTION
Review of this article will assist the technician with diagnosis of the Central Security Module and will reduce the unnecessary replacement of good components.
SERVICE INFORMATION
LIFTGATE GLASS RELEASE
2002 Explorer/Mountaineer vehicles requiring a service action to replace the Central Security Module (CSM) may not allow the operation of the liftgate glass release function after replacement of the module.
The CSM requires vehicle speed less than 3 mph (5 km/h) and all doors be electronically unlocked in order to operate this function either with the Remote Transmitter or with the exterior liftgate release button located on the liftgate door by the handle. When the module is replaced, the capability of the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) and it's circuitry is unknown to the new module. Before the CSM will enable the liftgate glass release function, the CSM must see a speed input. To do this, the technician must drive the vehicle above 3 mph (5 km/h) then allow vehicle speed to fall below 3 mph (5 km/h) in order for the GEM module to pass this information onto the CSM and enable the liftgate glass release feature.
REMOTE TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING
MODE/Vehicles Not Equipped With Ford
Perimeter Anti-Theft System.
All 2002 Explorers and Mountaineers are equipped with Remote keyless Entry (RKE) as standard equipment. Perimeter Anti-Theft (not the same as passive anti-theft or PATS) however, is an option. If the vehicle is NOT equipped with Perimeter Anti-Theft, the procedure outlined in the service manual for programming the remotes may not work. If the vehicle is not equipped with Perimeter Anti-Theft or the function is turned off, and you are attempting to program additional remotes, use the following procedure:
1. Open the driver's door and unlock the vehicle using the door trim panel unlock switch. This is an essential step and cannot be skipped.
2. Follow the standard procedure of cycling the ignition from OFF to RUN 8 times (within 10 seconds) with the eighth cycle ending in RUN.
3. Press any button on a remote entry transmitter, and the doors will lock, then unlock to confirm the remote entry transmitter is programmed. All remote entry transmitters must be programmed. Repeat this step for every transmitter wished to be programmed to the vehicle. Up to 4 is allowed.
4. If the door locks do not respond for any remote entry transmitter, wait several seconds and press the button again. If the door locks still fail to respond, refer to Diagnosis and Testing in Section 501-14 of the Workshop Manual.
5. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, or wait 20 seconds after Step 2, to exit the program mode. If any remote entry transmitter has been programmed the doors will lock and unlock one last time to confirm exiting the program mode.
KEYPAD ANTI-SCAN MODE
This feature is intended to prevent tampering and potential unlocking of the vehicle by random pressing of the keyless entry keypad buttons. This feature is activated when a series of 36 button presses are made without entry of the correct code. When this feature is activated, the keypad button lights will flash and the module will enter the anti-scan mode for 1 minute. During the anti-scan mode, entry of any code including the correct code will be ignored. Only the lock feature (simultaneously pressing the last two (buttons) is operational.
For the anti-scan counter to be reset to zero the correct code must be entered. The counter is also reset after the CSM exits the anti-scan mode.
SMART UNLOCK
All 2002 Explorer/Mountaineer vehicles may be intermittently unlocking the driver's door when the customer exits the vehicle and has attempted to lock the vehicle with the door trim switch. The vehicle may be exercising the Smart Unlock feature despite the proper removal of the ignition key from the switch. This may be caused by an inability of the production level CSM Module to process multiple network messages which arrive too close in succession. A revised CSM module with improved capability is under development and will be forthcoming. In the meantime, inform the customer to lock the vehicle via the remote entry transmitter, keyless entry keypad or key in door cylinder to prevent unwarranted driver door unlocking.
NOTE
THE SMART UNLOCK FEATURE WILL ONLY UNLOCK THE DRIVER'S DOOR. IF MORE THAN ONE DOOR IS UNLOCKING UN-COMMANDED, PROCEED WITH NORMAL DIAGNOSIS.
POWER DOOR UNLOCK INHIBIT
This feature is intended to reduce the chance of vehicle theft. This feature is operational as long as the feature is Enabled, all doors are closed and the ignition is OFF. When a customer exits and locks the vehicle electronically the module will disable the lock/unlock capability of the interior door unlock trim switch after 20 seconds. This will prevent the possibility of someone unlocking the vehicle from outside by use of a coat hanger, radio antenna etc. to push the door unlock switch.
NOTE
IF THE VEHICLE IS LOCKED ELECTRONICALLY WITH A PASSENGER REMAINING INSIDE, THAT PERSON WILL BE UNABLE TO UNLOCK THE VEHICLE USING THE POWER DOOR LOCK SWITCH AFTER THAT 20 SECOND PERIOD. THAT PERSON WILL HOWEVER BE ABLE TO UNLOCK THE VEHICLE MANUALLY FROM INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE USING THE INTERIOR DOOR UNLATCH HANDLES OR BY PRESSING THE ROCKER SWITCH LOCATED BELOW THE INTERIOR DOOR RELEASE HANDLE TO THE UNLOCK POSITION.
Vehicles built prior to January 2002 had this function enabled from the factory. Due to customer confusion and lack of awareness of the feature, it has been disabled for vehicles built after January of 2002. If a customer wishes to have it enabled again it is both customer and dealer configurable.
NOTE
IF YOU EXPERIENCE DIFFICULTY WITH ANY OF THE SERVICE PROCEDURES DESCRIBED ABOVE, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FOR 5 MINUTES, RECONNECT THE BATTERY AND PERFORM THE PROCEDURE AGAIN.
