Parking Pawl: Service and Repair

Removal
All vehicles
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the drain plug and drain the fluid.
3. If equipped, remove the converter housing plug.
4. If equipped, remove the converter drain plug and discard.
5. Remove the exhaust.
6. WARNING: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety chain. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
Support the transmission with a suitable jack.
4x4 vehicles
7. Remove the transfer case.
4x2 vehicles
8. Remove the driveshaft.
9. Remove the transmission support insulator nuts
10. Remove the bolts from the transmission support insulator.
11. Raise the transmission and remove the transmission support insulator.
All vehicles
12. Move the rubber boot back to gain access to the connector.
13. Disconnect the digital transmission range (TR) sensor connector.
14. Disconnect the shift cable and bracket.
15. Remove the outer manual control lever nut and lever.
16. Remove the digital TR sensor.
17. NOTE: The transmission fluid pan gasket is reusable, clean and inspect for damage. If not damaged, the gasket should be reused.
Remove the 16 transmission fluid pan screws, fluid pan, and gasket.
18. Remove the transmission fluid filter.
19. Remove the manual control valve detent spring.
20. CAUTION: To avoid damage, make sure the wrench does not strike the manual valve inner lever pin.
Remove the manual control lever inner nut.
21. Remove the manual lever shaft retaining pin.
22. Remove the manual control lever shaft.
23. Disconnect the manual valve inner lever from the parking lever actuating rod.
24. Remove the manual valve inner lever.
4x2 vehicles
25. NOTE: If damage to the parking gear is found, the transmission must be removed and disassembled.
NOTE: The parking pawl, parking pawl return spring and parking pawl shaft may fall out during removal of the extension housing.
Remove the extension housing.
4x4 vehicles
26. NOTE: If damage to the parking gear is found, the transmission must be removed and disassembled.
NOTE: The parking pawl, parking pawl return spring and parking pawl shaft may fall out during removal of the extension housing.
Remove the extension housing.
27. Remove and discard the gasket. Inspect the parking pawl, parking pawl return spring, and the parking pawl shaft. Discard components if damaged or worn.
All vehicles
28. Remove and discard the gasket. Inspect the parking pawl, parking pawl return spring, and the parking pawl shaft. Discard components if damaged or worn.
29. Remove the parking lever actuating rod.
Installation
All vehicles
1. Install the parking lever actuating rod.
2. Install the manual control lever.
3. Assemble the manual valve inner lever and parking lever actuating rod as shown.
4. CAUTION: Align the flats on the manual valve inner lever with the flats on the manual control lever shaft.
Align the flats of the manual inner lever with the flats on the manual control lever shaft. Install the manual valve inner lever and parking lever actuating rod onto the manual control lever shaft.
5. Install the manual valve inner lever onto the manual shaft and loosely install the nut.
6. CAUTION: Use care not to damage the fluid pan rail surface when installing the retaining pin.
NOTE: Align the manual control lever shaft alignment groove with the manual control lever shaft spring pin bore in the transmission case.
Install the manual control lever shaft spring pin. Tap the manual control lever shaft spring pin into the transmission case.
7. CAUTION: To avoid damage, do not allow the wrench to strike the manual valve inner lever pin.
Tighten the manual control lever inner nut.
8. With the manual lever in the NEUTRAL position, install the manual valve detent spring.
4x2 vehicles
9. Clean the extension housing and install a new extension housing gasket. Make sure that the parking pawl is correctly installed.
4x4 vehicles
10. Clean the extension housing and install a new extension housing gasket. Make sure that the parking pawl is correctly installed.
4x2 vehicles
11. CAUTION: Make sure the parking lever actuating rod is correctly seated into the case parking rod guide cup.
Install the extension housing.
4x4 vehicles
12. CAUTION: Make sure the parking lever actuating rod is correctly seated into the case parking rod guide cup.
Install the extension housing.
All vehicles
13. CAUTION: Lubricate the fluid filter seals with clean automatic transmission fluid or they may be damaged.
NOTE: Make sure that the fluid filter seals are correctly seated on the filter.
Lubricate the seals and install the transmission fluid filter.
14. NOTE: The transmission fluid pan gasket is reusable, clean and inspect for damage. If not damaged, the gasket should be reused.
Install the fluid pan gasket on the fluid pan.
15. Install the transmission fluid pan and gasket and loosely install the screws.
16. Tighten the screws in a crisscross sequence.
17. CAUTION: The digital transmission range sensor must fit flush against the boss on the case to prevent damage to the sensor.
Install the digital TR sensor and loosely install the screws.
18. CAUTION: Tightening one screw before tightening the other may cause the sensor to bind or become damaged.
NOTE: The manual lever must be in the NEUTRAL position.
Using the special tool, align the digital TR sensor and tighten the screws in an alternating sequence.
19. Install the outer manual lever and nut.
20. Install the shift cable and bracket.
21. Connect the digital TR sensor connector.
22. Move the rubber boot back over the connector.
23. NOTE: A new converter drain plug must be used to prevent leakage.
If removed, install a new converter drain plug.
24. If removed, install the converter housing access plug.
4x4 vehicles
25. Install the transfer case.
4x2 vehicles
26. Install the transmission support insulator and lower the transmission onto the transmission support insulator.
27. Install the transmission support insulator bolts.
28. Install the transmission support insulator nuts.
29. Install the driveshaft.
All vehicles
30. Install the exhaust.
31. Partially fill the transmission.
