Draining, Filling and Bleeding

Cooling System Draining, Filling And Bleeding
Draining

WARNING: Do not open the cooling system while it is hot or engine is running.

CAUTION: The coolant must be recovered in a suitable, clean container for reuse. If the coolant is contaminated it must be recycled or disposed of correctly.

1. WARNING: Never remove the radiator cap under any conditions while the engine is operating. Failure to follow these instructions could result in damage to the cooling system or engine and/or personal injury. To avoid having scalding hot coolant or steam blow out of the radiator use extreme care when removing the radiator cap from a hot radiator. Wait until the engine has cooled, then wrap a thick cloth around the radiator cap and turn it slowly to the first stop. Step back while the pressure is released from the cooling system. When it is certain all the pressure has been released, press down on the cap (still with a cloth), turn and remove.

Allow the engine to cool and remove the radiator cap.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Remove the engine splash shield.
4. Place a suitable container below the radiator draincock. If so equipped, disconnect the coolant return hose at the oil cooler.
5. Open the radiator draincock.

6. Remove the LH cylinder block drain plug to drain the coolant from the cylinder block.

7. Remove the RH cylinder block drain plug to drain the coolant from the cylinder block.

8. Remove and clean the coolant expansion tank.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Remove and clean the coolant expansion tank.

9. Install the coolant expansion tank.
1 Position the coolant expansion tank.
2 Install the bolts.

10. Remove the engine air relief plug.

11. When the coolant is drained, install the LH drain plug.

12. Install the RH drain plug.
13. Close the radiator draincock.
14. Lower the vehicle.

Filling and Bleeding

1. NOTE: When filler neck is full, gently move upper radiator hose up and down while filling until coolant no longer lowers in the filler neck.

Slowly fill the radiator with the correct 50/50 mixture of Premium Cooling System Fluid E2FZ-19549-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A until coolant fills the radiator filler neck.

2. Insert a wire under the negative pressure valve of the radiator cap.

3. Install the radiator cap.

4. Disconnect the coolant expansion tank tube from the radiator.

5. Hang a one gallon modified bottle above the engine air relief hole and connect a suitable tube from it to the coolant expansion tank tube port on the radiator.
^ Clamp the tube to prevent coolant flow though the tube and fill the modified bottle with the correct 50/50 mixture of Premium Cooling System Fluid E2FZ-19549-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A and water.
6. Unclamp the tube used with the modified bottle and allow coolant to flow until coolant comes out of the engine air relief hole, then reclamp tube.

7. Install the engine air relief plug.

8. Raise and support the vehicle using a suitable supporting device.
9. Set the heater controls to full warm and blower to high.
10. Unclamp the tube used with the modified bottle.
11. Start the engine and maintain 1500 RPM until the cooling fan turns on.
12. Turn the engine off and let the engine cool off completely.
13. Remove the supporting device and lower the vehicle.
14. Clamp the tube used with the modified bottle.

15. Remove the modified one gallon bottle and tube.

16. Connect the coolant expansion tank tube to the radiator.

18. Remove the wire from the radiator cap.
19. Completely fill the radiator with the correct 50/50 mixture of Premium Cooling System Fluid E2FZ-19549-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A and water.

20. Fill the coolant expansion tank to the MAX mark.

21. Install the radiator cap.
