Special Tools:

Special Tool(s)

Disassembly

1. Remove the 3-4 clutch hub assembly.
1 Remove the hub.
2 Remove the bearing.

2. Remove the oil seals from the 3-4 clutch drum and input shaft.

3. Remove the 3-4 clutch pack snap ring.

4. Remove the 3-4 clutch pack.

5. Remove the 3-4 clutch piston snap ring.
1 Using the special tool, compress the clutch piston.
2 Remove the snap ring.

6. Remove the 3-4 clutch piston spring retainer assembly.
1 Remove the spring retainer.
2 Remove the springs.

7. NOTE: Block off the opposite side of the indicated port.

Remove the 3-4 clutch piston.
- Apply compressed air to the port to remove the piston.

8. Remove the seals from the 3-4 clutch piston.

9. NOTE: The 3-4 clutch piston springs and spring retainer must be replaced as an assembly.

Inspect the 3-4 clutch and input shaft assembly components for wear or damage. Replace as necessary.

10. Measure the thickness of the 3-4 clutch plate facings. A new clutch plate facing will be 1.6 mm (0.063 inch) thick. If any of the facings are less than 1.4 mm (0.055 inch) thick, replace all of the 3-4 clutch plate facings.

11. Verify proper check ball operation.
- Apply compressed air to the check ball hole opposite the return spring side. No air should leak past the check ball. If air leaks past the check ball, install a new 3-4 clutch piston.

12. Verify proper check ball operation.
- Apply compressed air to the check ball oil hole on the return spring side. Air should leak past the check ball. If no air leaks past the check ball, install a new 3-4 clutch piston.

13. Install new oil seals on the 3-4 clutch drum and input shaft.

14. Check the seal side clearance. The clearance should be 0.08 mm (0.0031 inch) to 0.23 mm (0.0091 inch). If the clearance is above specification, install a new 3-4 clutch drum and input shaft.

Assembly

1. Install new 3-4 clutch piston seals.
- Coat the seals with Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON prior to installation. MERCON(R) Automatic Trqansmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON(R) V as a service fluid, as per TSB 06-14-4.

2. Install the 3-4 clutch piston.
1 Coat the 3-4 clutch drum and input shaft with Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON.
2 Install the clutch piston.

3. Install the 3-4 clutch piston spring retainer assembly.
1 Install the springs.
2 Install the spring retainer.

4. Install the 3-4 clutch snap ring.
1 Using the special tool, compress the clutch piston.
2 Install the snap ring.

5. Install the 3-4 clutch pack.

6. Install the 3-4 clutch pack snap ring.

7. Measure the clearance between the 3-4 clutch snap ring and the pressure plate.

8. The standard clearance for the 3-4 clutch pack is 1.8 - 2.2 mm (0.071 - 0.087 inch). The maximum clearance for the pack is 3.0 mm (0.12 inch). If the clearance is greater than 3.0 mm (0.118 inch), select and install the correct thickness pressure plate.

9. Use compressed air to check the operation of the 3-4 clutch pack.

10. CAUTION: Be sure to unwrap the input shaft seals prior to transaxle assembly.

Wrap the input shaft seals to prevent them from spreading prior to transaxle assembly.
