Cylinder Head

Removal and Installation
1. Remove the intake manifold.





2. Slide the water heater tube back and remove. Discard the O - ring seal.
3. Remove the timing chains.
4. Remove the exhaust manifolds.
5. Remove the components in the order indicated.

6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
7. Install the exhaust manifolds.
8. Install the timing chains.
9. Install the intake manifold.

1. CAUTION: The cylinder head bolts must be discarded and new bolts installed. They are tighten - to - yield designed and cannot be reused.

CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.

Remove the bolts and the RH cylinder head.
^ Discard the head gasket and clean the engine block surface with a plastic scraper and metal surface cleaner.

1. CAUTION: The cylinder head bolts must be discarded and new bolts installed. They are tighten - to - yield designed and cannot be reused.

Remove the bolts and the LH cylinder head.

1. NOTE: The RH head gasket is shown; the LH head gasket is similar.

Install the head gasket over the dowel pins.





2. NOTE: The RH cylinder head is shown; the LH cylinder head is similar.

Install the cylinder head on the head gasket and loosely install the bolts

LH:





3. NOTE: Make sure to tighten the bolts in sequence in six stages.

Tighten the LH bolts in the sequence shown.
^ Stage 1: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
^ Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.
^ Stage 3: Back out all bolts one full turn (360 degrees).
^ Stage 4: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
^ Stage 5: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.
^ Stage 6: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.

RH:





4. NOTE: Make sure to tighten the bolts in the six stages.

Tighten the RH bolts in the sequence shown.
^ Stage 1: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
^ Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.
^ Stage 3: Back out all bolts one full turn (360 degrees).
^ Stage 4: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
^ Stage 5: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.
