Disassembly
NOTE: For an exploded view and part location, refer to Disassembled Views. Disassembled Views
1. NOTE: If the installation of a new chain cover is necessary the main control wire harness will need to be transferred to the new chain cover.
Press tabs and remove the harness.
2. Remove the thrust washers.
1 Remove the No. 1 drive sprocket thrust washer.
2 Remove the No. 3 chain cover thrust washer.
3. Remove the bolt and the manual valve detent spring.
4. Remove the accumulator piston shafts.
5. CAUTION: Do not use any objects in the piston shaft bore for removal. Damage to the bore will result.
NOTE: Tag and mark the location of the accumulator pistons.
Remove the accumulator pistons.
6. CAUTION: Use care not to damage the machined surface of the chain cover.
NOTE: The use of side cutters supported by a small piece of wood will aid in the removal of the bi-metal retaining collars.
Remove the bi-metal element and the thermostat plate.
Assembly
1. Measure the distance that the center bi-metal element pin protrudes from the chain cover.
2. Using the special tool, install the bi-metal element.
1 Position the bi-metal strip onto the end of the pin.
2 Install the special tool under the bi-metal element.
3 Tap the retaining collar onto the pin until it seats against the special tool edge.
3. Using the special tool install the bi-metal element.
1 Position the bi-metal strip onto the end of the pin.
2 Install the special tool under the bi-metal element.
3 Tap the retaining collar onto the pin until it seats against the special tool edge.
4. Remove the slotted end of the bi-metal element and install the thermostat plate over the end and middle pins.
5. Install the slotted end of the bi-metal element under the retaining ring.
6. CAUTION: Do not allow the pistons to cock in their bores or damage to the seals may result.
NOTE: Coat the new seals with petroleum jelly.
Install new seals on the accumulator pistons.
7. Install the pistons into the correct bore of the cover with spring pocket up.
8. NOTE: The use of petroleum jelly will hold the accumulator piston shafts in place while assembling the chain cover.
Install the accumulator piston shafts.
9. Install the manual valve detent spring.
10. NOTE: The use of petroleum jelly will hold the thrust washers in place during assembly.
Install the thrust washers.
1 Install the No. 1 drive sprocket thrust washer.
2 Install the No. 3 chain cover thrust washer.
11. Install internal wire harness if it was removed.
