IDENTIFICATION CODES
The vehicle identification number (VIN) is a seventeen-digit combination of letters and numbers. The VIN is stamped on a metal tab riveted on the instrument panel, top upper left of the dash. The VIN is also found on the vehicle certification (VC) label.

World Manufacturer Identifier:

The first three vehicle identification number (VIN) positions are the world manufacturer identifier.
- 2FM - Ford Motor Company - Canada, multi-purpose vehicle
- 2FT - Ford Motor Company - Canada, truck (completed vehicle)
- 2MR - Ford Motor Company (Mercury) - Canada, multi-purpose vehicle

Brake Type:

The fourth VIN position identifies the brake type and gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR).
- D - Hydraulic brakes - 5,001-6,000 pounds (GVWR) - driver and front passenger air bags - driver and front passenger side impact air bags and canopies
- Z - Hydraulic brakes - 5,001-6,000 pounds (GVWR) - driver and front passenger air bags

Line and Series:

VIN positions five through seven indicate the vehicle line and series.

Engine Code:

The eighth VIN position is the engine type (displacement and number of cylinders).
- 2 - 4.2L, OHV, EFI, six cylinder
- 6 - 3.9L, OHV, EFI, six cylinder

Check Digit:

The ninth VIN position is a computer generated check digit.

Model Year:

The tenth VIN position is the model year code.
- 4 - 2004

Assembly Plant:

The eleventh VIN position is the assembly plant code.
- B - Oakville - Oakville, Ontario (Canada)

Build Sequence:

VIN positions twelve through seventeen are an alphanumeric code for the vehicle build sequence. This is also the vehicle serial and warranty number.
