SPECIAL TOOL(S)

REMOVAL

WARNING:
- Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an air bag module. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
- Carry a live air bag module with the air bag and trim cover pointed away from your body. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
- Do not set a live air bag module down with the trim cover face down. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
- After deployment, the air bag surface can contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.
- Never probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so can result in air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.
- Air bag modules with discolored or damaged trim covers must be replaced, not repainted.
- The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system service only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.

NOTE:
- The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
- Repair is made by installing a new part only. If the new part does not correct the condition, install the original part and perform the diagnostic procedure again.

1. WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before servicing, replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors or RCM, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.

The front impact severity sensor is located under the hood latch bracket.

The first row side impact sensors (if equipped) are located under the seat, beneath the carpet.

The second row side impact sensors (if equipped) are located at or near the base of the C-pillar.

To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).

Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.

2. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, notes, and instructions in the supplemental restraint system (SRS) deactivation/reactivation procedure. Refer to Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming.

Deactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS). Refer to Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming.

3. Remove the steering wheel from the vehicle.

4. Remove the screws and the steering wheel back cover.

5. NOTE: The driver air bag module electrical connector has already been separated from the wire shield in the deactivation procedure.

Hold the retainer and slide the accessory electrical connector off.

6. NOTE: Within the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Deactivation and Reactivation procedure the driver air bag module is disconnected and a restraint system diagnostic tool is attached at the appropriate location.

Remove the parts in the order indicated in the illustration and table.

Item 1: Spring Clip Removal Note

1. NOTE: After separation of the driver air bag module from the steering wheel, the horn switch ground electrical connector will still be connected.

Separate the driver air bag module from the steering wheel.
1 Push in on the spring clip.
2 Release the spring clip from the tabs on the steering wheel and separate that side of the driver air bag module from the steering wheel.
3 Push in on the spring clip.
4 Release the spring clip from the tabs on the steering wheel and separate that side of the driver air bag module from the steering wheel.

Item 2: Connector Removal Note

1. Lift the driver air bag module off the steering wheel, disconnect the horn switch electrical connector and route out the driver air bag module electrical connector.

INSTALLATION

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, and notes at the beginning of the removal procedure.

NOTE: Make sure the battery negative cable is still disconnected before continuing with the installation portion of this procedure.

1. Install the parts in the order indicated in the illustration and table.

2. Align the steering wheel back cover to the steering wheel and install the screws.
- Make sure that the steering wheel back cover is seated all the way around in the steering wheel mating groove.

3. Install the steering wheel onto the vehicle. Do not reactivate the supplemental restraint system at this time.

4. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the clockspring electrical connector at the top of the steering column.

5. Through the steering wheel access door opening, connect the driver air bag module electrical connector and attach it to the retainer.

6. Close the steering wheel access door.
7. Connect the battery ground cable.

8. WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system service only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.

With the restraint system diagnostic tools still installed at the remaining deployable devices, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS). Prove Out Procedure

To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).

Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.

10. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes, and instructions in the supplemental restraint system (SRS) deactivation/reactivation procedure. Refer to Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming.

Reactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS). Refer to Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming.

11. Connect the battery ground cable.

12. WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system service only. Remove from the vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.

With all the restraint system diagnostic tools removed, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS). Prove Out Procedure

Item 2: Driver Air Bag Module Installation Note

1. Make sure the spring clip is behind all the holders on the driver air bag module.

2. NOTE: The four driver air bag module springs and four steering wheel seats can be seen in the overview installation graphic.

Align the four driver air bag module springs to the steering wheel seats.
- At the top, the springs will align into the cups.
- At the bottom, the springs will align around the pins.

3. With the driver air bag module springs aligned to the steering wheel seats, push in on the driver air bag module, seating the spring clip behind the steering wheel tabs.
- Make sure the spring clip is securely fastened behind the tabs on the steering wheel.

Item 3: Connector Installation Note

1. Attach the electrical connectors to the retainers.
