FRONT BLOWER MOTOR WHISTLE NOISE
FORD:
2004-2005 Freestar
MERCURY:
2004-2005 Monterey
ISSUE
Some 2004-2005 Freestar/Monterey vehicles may exhibit a whistling noise from the instrument panel coming from the front blower motor. Typically the noise will occur when the blower motor is set to high speed, the air recirculation is deactivated (fresh air mode) and when the climate control temperature is set to cold. The noise is due to an air gap in the blower motor housing at the electrical connector (Figure 1).
ACTION
To service, first verify if the noise is coming from this location. If the noise is coming from this location, seal the air gap. Refer to the following Concern Verification method and Service Procedure.
CONCERN VERIFICATION
1. Locate the blower motor behind the glove box.
2. With the front blower motor running, place an object (such as a shop-towel) on top of the area behind the motor connector. There should be a change in the noise frequency, or the noise may completely stop, but will return when clearing the area behind the electrical connector.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE
IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO REMOVE THE MOTOR FROM THE INSTRUMENT PANEL TO PERFORM THIS PROCEDURE.
1. Lower the glove box compartment.
2. Detach the motor's electrical connector.
3. Apply Motorcraft Clear Silicone Rubber (TA-32) using fine pointed nozzle in the area behind the electrical connector (Figure 1).
4. Re-seat the electrical Connector.
5. Verify fix and reassemble glove box.
