5R555 TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKS FROM
CONVERTER HOUSING AREA - DTC P1783-
VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO 12/12/2004

FORD:
2004-2005 Explorer

MERCURY:
2004-2005 Mountaineer

ISSUE
Some 2004-2005 Explorer 4dr/Mountaineer vehicles built prior to 12/12/2004, may exhibit a transmission fluid leak coming from the converter housing area. The fluid will leak to the inside of the converter housing, through the transmission vent, and then migrate out. The vehicle may also exhibit a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P1783 (transmission over temperature) and a flashing transmission indicator lamp.

ACTION
If fluid is coming from the converter housing area refer to Workshop Manual Section 307-01. Check the transmission fluid level and follow normal diagnosis for fluid leaks to determine the leak source. If the leak is verified to be coming from the transmission vent, it will be necessary to blow out the vent and reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM). Refer to the following Service Procedure. If the transmission vent is not the leak source then follow normal repair procedures per the Workshop Manual, do not continue with the TSB.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Verify that the vehicle was built prior to 12/12/2004 and that the vent is the leak source.

2. Using air pressure (30 psi), clear out the vent system.

3. Adjust the transmission fluid to the proper level.

4. Clear KAM by disconnecting the vehicle battery for 20 minutes.

5. Reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration using WDS release B34.13 and higher or B35.4 and higher. Calibration files may also be obtained at the website.

NOTE
THIS NEW CALIBRATION IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE B35 CD.

NOTE
AFTER PCM REPROGRAMMING IS COMPLETED, THE TRANSMISSION ADAPTIVE STRATEGY FOR PRESSURE CONTROL ON ENGAGEMENTS MUST BE LEARNED. STEPS 8-8c MUST BE PERFORMED IN SEQUENCE FOR THE TRANSMISSION ENGAGEMENT PRESSURES TO ADAPT PROPERLY.

6. Install diagnostic equipment and monitor the transmission fluid temperature (TFT).

7. Warm the transmission/fluid to at least 130° F (54° C) as indicated by the TFT.

8. Perform five (5) engagements from PARK to REVERSE. Each engagement must be 5 seconds apart. (Example: Shift from park to reverse, let the transmission engage reverse gear, then immediately shift back to park. Then wait 5 seconds and repeat.)

a. Perform five (5) engagements from DRIVE to REVERSE. Each engagement must be 5 seconds apart.

b. Perform five (5) engagements from REVERSE to DRIVE. Each engagement must be 5 seconds apart.

c. Perform five (5) engagements from NEUTRAL to DRIVE. Each engagement must be 5 seconds apart.
