Parking Brake System: Service and Repair

Parking Brake





Special Tool(s)

1. If removing the rear brake cables, remove the rear wheel and tire assembles.
2. Remove the parts in the order indicated in the following illustration and table.

To remove individual parts, only carry out the listed steps:
3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
4. Inspect the brake system for correct operation.

Item 1: Pin Removal Note
1. Remove the LH A-pillar lower trim panel.
2. With an assistant, release the parking brake cable tension by pulling down on the intermediate cable at the cable union until the parking brake control sector rotates to its stop and a 4 mm (5/32 inch) x 150 mm (5.9 inch) retainer pin can be inserted.





3. Disconnect the cable union.

Item 2: Parking Brake Release Handle Removal Note





1. Remove the screws and the instrument panel steering column cover.
2. Release the release handle grommet from the bracket.

Item 4: Parking Brake Switch Removal Note
1. Disconnect the parking brake switch electrical connector.

Item 5: Parking Brake Control Bolts Removal Note
1. Disconnect the battery.





2. Loosen the bolt and disconnect the instrument panel-to-body harness electrical connector.

Item 6: Parking Brake Control Removal Note
1. Disconnect the parking brake switch electrical connector.





2. Remove the screw and position the bracket and wiring connector aside.

Item 7: Front Parking Brake Cable Removal Note





1. Bend the take-up spool tab up.
2. Compress the tabs and remove the front cable and conduit from the parking brake control.
3. If removing the cable, position the cable and grommet through the floor pan, into the passenger compartment and remove the cable and conduit assembly.

Item 9: Intermediate Parking Brake Cable Removal Note





1. Disconnect the RH and LH parking brake cable from the intermediate parking brake cable.

Item 10 and 14: Rear Parking Brake Cable Removal Note





1. Unclip the parking brake rear cable and conduit from the parking brake lever.





2. Compress the clip and release the parking brake rear cable and conduit from the parking brake lever.

Item 17: Parking Brake Shoe Adjusting Screw Removal Note
1. Remove the rear brake disc.

Item 22: Parking Brake Shoe Kit Installation Note
1. One parking brake shoe kit contains the lining required for both the LH and RH side.

Item 17: Brake Shoe Kit Installation Note





1. Use the special tool to measure the inside diameter of the drum position of the rear brake disc. Adjust the parking brake cage clearance of 1.07 mm (0.04 inch) less than the inside diameter of the drum portion of the rear brake disc.
^ Make sure that the parking brake shoes are correctly centered and measure across the center point.





2. Rotate the parking brake shoe adjuster wheel to achieve the correct parking brake shoe-to-brake disc clearance.

Item 7: Front Parking Brake Cable Installation Note





1. Install the front parking brake cable into the parking brake control and bend the take-up spool tab down.

Item 6: Parking Brake Control Installation Note





1. Position the bracket, connect the parking brake switch electrical connector and install the screw.

Item 5: Parking Brake Control Bolts Installation Note





1. Connect the instrument panel-to-body harness electrical connector.
2. Connect the battery.

Item 2: Parking Brake Release Handle Screws Installation Note
1. Position the release handle grommet into the bracket.





2. Install the instrument panel steering column cover and screws.

Item 1: Pin Installation Note
1. Connect the cable union.
2. With an assistant, release the parking brake cable tension by pulling down on the intermediate cable at the cable union until the parking brake control sector pressure is released, remove the pin.
3. Install the A-pillar lower trim panel.
