Cylinder Head-LH

Material

Removal

CAUTION: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Remove the LH exhaust manifold.
3. Remove the lower intake manifold.
4. Remove the push rods from the LH cylinder head.
5. Remove the generator.
6. Remove the accessory drive belt idler pulley.
7. Remove the generator brace bolt.
8. Remove the 2 A/C compressor mounting bracket brace bolts.

9. NOTE: Clearance between the engine and vehicle frame is limited.

Remove the A/C compressor mounting bracket brace, 2 long bolts and generator mounting bracket from the engine as an assembly.
10. Disconnect the CHT sensor electrical connector.

11. Remove the lower exhaust manifold studs to access the LH cylinder head bolts.
12. Remove and discard the 4 short LH cylinder head bolts.
13. Remove and discard the 4 long LH cylinder head bolts.
14. Remove the LH cylinder head.
^ Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.

15. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.

CAUTION: Observe all warnings or cautions and follow all application directions contained on the packaging of the silicone gasket remover and the metal surface prep.

NOTE: If there is no residual gasket material present, metal surface prep can be used to clean and prepare the surfaces.

Clean the cylinder head-to-cylinder block mating surface of both the cylinder head and the cylinder block.
1. Remove any large deposits of silicone or gasket material with a plastic scraper.
2. Apply silicone gasket remover, following package directions and allow to set for several minutes.
3. Remove the silicone gasket remover with a plastic scraper. A second application of silicone gasket remover may be required if residual traces of silicone or gasket material remaining.
4. Apply metal surface prep, following package directions, to remove any traces of oil or coolant and to prepare the surfaces to bond with the new gasket. Do not attempt to make the metal shiny. Some staining of the metal surfaces is normal.

16. Inspect the cylinder head for distortion.

Installation
1. Install the new cylinder head gasket and the LH cylinder head.

2. CAUTION: Always use new bolts.

NOTE: Lubricate the bolts with clean engine oil prior to installation.

Install the new bolts. Make sure the bolts are installed in the correct locations.
1. Install the 4 new long bolts.
2. Install the 4 new short bolts.

3. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in 3 stages.
^ Stage 1: Tighten to 20 Nm (14 ft. lbs.).
^ Stage 2: Tighten to 40 Nm (29 ft. lbs.).
^ Stage 3: Tighten to 50 Nm (36 ft. lbs.).

4. CAUTION: Each bolt must be loosened and the final tightening carried out prior to working on the next bolt in the sequence. Do not loosen all of the bolts at one time.

Carry out the following final tightening process on each bolt in the sequence shown.
^ Long bolts: Loosen the long bolt and back out 3 turns.
Tighten the long bolt to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
Tighten the long bolt an additional 180 degrees.
Go to the next bolt in sequence.
^ Short bolts:
Loosen the short bolt and back out 3 turns.
Tighten the short bolt to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
Tighten the short bolt an additional 180 degrees.
Go to the next bolt in sequence.

5. Install the LH exhaust manifold lower studs.
^ Tighten to 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.).

6. Connect the CHT sensor electrical connector.
7. Install the A/C compressor mounting bracket brace, 2 long bolts and generator mounting bracket to the engine as an assembly.
^ Tighten to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).

8. Install the 2 A/C compressor mounting bracket brace bolts.
^ Tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).

9. Install the generator brace bolt.
^ Tighten to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).

10. Install the accessory drive belt idler pulley.
11. Install the generator.
12. Install the push rods from the LH cylinder head.
13. Install the lower intake manifold.
14. Install the LH exhaust manifold.

15. Drain the engine oil.
^ Tighten to 26 Nm (19 ft. lbs.).

16. NOTE: Lubricate the new oil filter seal with clean engine oil prior to installation.

Install a new oil filter.
^ Tighten oil filter one half turn after the gasket makes contact with the oil filter housing.

17. Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
