PINPOINT TEST Y: THE LOW OIL PRESSURE WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

Normal Conditions
The engine oil pressure switch is a normally closed switch that is hardwired to the instrument cluster through instrument cluster circuit 253 (DG/WH). When the oil pressure is within normal ranges, the engine oil pressure switch opens, removing the ground signal to the instrument cluster and turns off the low oil pressure warning indicator. When oil pressure is low, the engine oil pressure switch closes, supplying the ground to the instrument cluster to turn on the low oil pressure warning indicator. The oil pressure is measured only when the internal combustion engine is running. The powertrain control module (PCM) sends the instrument cluster a message over the communication network to turn off the low oil pressure warning indicator when the internal combustion engine is greater than 500 rpm and the engine has met the oil pressure requirements.

Possible Causes
- circuit 253 (DG/WH) open, short to ground, or short to voltage
- engine oil pressure switch
- PCM
- instrument cluster
