FORD:
2006 Explorer
MERCURY:
2006 Mountaineer
ISSUE
Some 2006 Explorer 4dr/Mountaineer vehicles may experience a brake drag condition. Customers may notice an odor, reduced powertrain performance or that the vehicles transmission may not shift into higher gear. Once the brakes have cooled off, the condition may not exhibit itself again until the brakes are reheated.
ACTION
Refer to the Service Procedure for additional diagnostic information.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Does the operator drive with the Adjustable Pedals in the full rear/up position?
a. Yes - Go to Step 2.
b. No - Go to Step 4.
2. Check if the brake pedal contacts the 14401 harness which is tie strapped to the instrument panel brace directly above the brake pedal.
a. Yes - Cut the tie strap and reposition the wire harness inboard so that it does not contact the pedal in the full rear position and install a new zip tie (Figure 1).
b. No - Go to Step 3.
3. Ensure there are no other wire harnesses or connectors which would interfere with the brake pedal and/or switches.
a. Yes - Reposition the wire harness so that harness does not interfere with the pedal/switches.
b. No - Go to Step 4.
4. Monitor the ABS module Booster Brake Pedal Force SW_NO PID (NGS PID PDFCENO; WDS/IDS/PDS PID BSTRBP-FSNO). This PID should read CLOSED when the brake is not applied and should change to OPEN when slight brake pressure is applied. Is the system operating normally?
a. Yes - Go to Step 6.
b. No - Go to Step 5.
5. Remove and reinstall the brake on/off (BOO) (Black Switch) and Redundant Cruise Switch (Blue Switch). Do the switch plungers operate normally and without sticking?
a. Yes - Reinstall switches and go to Step 6.
b. No - Replace the defective switch.
NOTE
THE BLUE SWITCH MUST BE INSTALLED FIRST AND THE BRAKE PEDAL MUST NOT BE DEPRESSED AT ALL DURING THE INSTALLATION OF BOTH SWITCHES.
6. Check the white clevis pin. Is it properly installed into the booster rod and brake pedal? This pin should not hang up on any part of the pedal bracket during pedal cycling.
a. Yes - Go to Step 7.
b. No - Repair as necessary.
7. If none of the above conditions are found inspect the brake booster for damage.
