ISSUE
Some 2006 Explorer 4dr/Mountaineer and 2007 Explorer Sport Trac vehicles built before 4/27/2006 may experience a wind / whistle noise coming from the left side exterior mirror area between 40-70 MPH (64-113 Km/h). This may be due to unwanted airflow between the mirror and the door or from a wind turbulence within the mirror housing.
ACTION
Use the following Service Procedures to repair the concern.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
For 2006 Explorer 4dr/Mountaineer or 2007 Explorer Sport Trac vehicles built after 1/3/2006 and before 4/27/2006 go to Step 1. For 2006 Explorer 4dr and Mountaineer vehicles built before 1/3/2006 go to Step 2.
1. For vehicles built after 1/3/2006 and before 4/27/2006.
a. Remove the left hand mirror glass following Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-09.
NOTE
USE CARE IN FOLLOWING THE PROCEDURES TO AVOID MIRROR GLASS BREAKAGE.
b. Apply Clear Silicone Rubber to the internal mirror structure (Figure 1).
c. Reinstall mirror glass per, WSM, Section 501-09).
2. For only 2006 Explorer 4 dr/Mountaineers built before 1/3/2006.
a. Remove the mirror assembly following procedures listed in the Workshop Manual, Section 501-09.
NOTE
VEHICLES PRODUCED AFTER THIS DATE ALREADY HAVE THE TAPE IN THIS LOCATION.
b. Install 1-1/4" x 2-3/4" (30 x 70 mm) approximate size pieces of foam tape from the rattle I squeak kit, Part Number 164-R4901,in the two (2) positions shown in Figure 2.
c. Reinstall the mirror per WSM, Section 501-09.
