Interior - Front Power Seat(s) Grind/Bind/Clicking Noises

GRINDING OR CLICKING NOISE DURING POWER
SEAT OPERATION

2006-2010 Mountaineer

ISSUE
Some 2006-2010 Explorer, Mountaineer, and 2007-2010 Explorer Sport Trac vehicles may exhibit a power seat binding during seat control tilt and or
lift adjustment operation. There may also be clicking or grinding noise heard from the seat track area, specifically coming from either the front tilt or rear vertical lift gearboxes.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Operate the front driver and/or passenger seat by tilting the front of the seat or lifting the rear.

a. If clicking or binding is present, proceed to Step 2.

b. If no clicking or binding is present, discontinue with this article, Refer to the Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-10.

2. Remove front driver or passenger seat. Refer to WSM, Section 501-10.








3. Remove the four (4) seat module mounting plate screws and position aside. (Figures 1 and 2)





4. Remove and discard the clevis pin. (Figure 3)





5. Remove the rear motor plastic spacer. (Figure 4)





6. Disengage the motor driveshaft. (Figure 5)





7. Remove the four (4) gearbox screws and separate the case gearbox housing halves. (Figure 6)

8. Remove the thrust disc, drive gear and worm gear from the gearbox housing.





9. Clean the gearbox housing halves of grease and/or broken plastic white gear pieces, using small brush. (Figure 7)

NOTE
DO NOT USE ANY CHEMICAL SPRAY OR SOLVENT TO CLEAN THE PARTS. THIS COULD CAUSE THE PLASTIC TO DETERIORATE IN THE GEARS OR GEARBOX HOUSING HALVES.

10. Apply a small amount of grease (supplied with the service kit) to the thrust disc and worm gear.

11. Install the thrust disc and worm gear into the gearbox housing. (Figure 7)





12. Apply grease (supplied with the service kit) to the drive gear. (Figure 8)





13. Install drive gear assembly into the case gearbox housing. (Figure 9)

a. If components are correctly installed, the gearbox housing halves will fit together with very little effort.

14. Check for excessive gearbox free play, push/pull on metal drive nut. No perceived looseness should be noticed.





15. Install gearbox housing screws and hand tighten. (Figure 10)





16. Position rear gear assembly aside in order to gain access to the front gear assembly. (Figure 11)

17. Repeat Steps 4-14 for the front gearbox assembly.

18. Install drive cable for the front gearbox assembly.

a. Avoid excessive bending during installation.

19. Install rear motor plastic spacer.

20. Align drive nut to torsion bar link and install clevis pin. Use vise-grips or equivalent to squeeze the clevis pin in completely against the drive nut.

21. Position back the seat module mounting plate and install the four (4) screws. (Figures 1 and 2)

22. Install front driver and/or passenger seat. Refer to WSM, Section 501-10-01.

23. While sitting in the seat, operate the front and rear tilt five (5) times.
