Special Tool(s):

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.

2. NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms can occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. Notify the customer that they can experience slightly different upshifts either (soft or firm) and that this is a temporary condition and will eventually return to normal operating condition.

Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery.
3. Remove the coolant expansion tank bolts and position the tank aside.
4. Remove the fan shroud bolts. Do not remove the fan shroud.
5. If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.
^ Install the drain plug when finished.
6. If equipped, remove the 4 bolts and the skid plate.

7. Remove the 2 RH heat shield bolts and position the RH heat shield aside.

8. NOTE: LH side shown, RH side similar.

Disconnect the 2 HO2S electrical connectors.

9. NOTE: LH side shown, RH side similar.

Disconnect the 2 catalyst monitor sensor electrical connectors.

10. Remove the LH exhaust heat shield bolt.

11. If equipped, remove the RH exhaust heat shield.

12. Remove the bolts, springs and flagnuts and separate the muffler from the converter.
^ Discard the gasket.
^ Discard the flagnuts.

13. NOTE: RH side shown, LH similar.

Remove the 4 converter-to-manifold nuts.

14. Install a suitable jackstand under the transfer case.

15. Remove the 4 RH side crossmember bolts and the nut.

16. Remove the 4 LH side crossmember bolts and the nut.

17. Remove the transmission support insulator nuts and remove the crossmember.

18. NOTE: This step may require an assistant.

Remove the 3-way converter system.

19. NOTE: LH side shown, RH similar.

If required, remove the transmission insulator.

20. Remove the cable shield by prying on the side of the shield closest to the boot, then sliding the shield away from the boot.

21. Remove the selector lever cable and bracket.
^ Disconnect the cable from the lever.
^ Remove the bolts and position the selector lever cable and bracket aside.

22. Remove the driveshafts.
