Removal - Transaxle




Transaxle - 3.0L









All vehicles

NOTE: Carry out the transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning if the transaxle is being overhauled or if installing a new or remanufactured transaxle. For additional information, refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Backflushing and Cleaning Transmission Fluid Cooler Backflushing and Cleaning.

NOTE: Carry out the transmission fluid cooler flow test if the transaxle is being overhauled or if installing a new or remanufactured transaxle. For additional information, refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler 6F35 Automatic Transmission.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.

2. Remove the battery and the battery tray.

3. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) and outlet pipe assembly.

All-Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles

4. Disconnect the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) vent hose from the clip located on the transmission fluid filler tube.





All vehicles

5. Disconnect the selector lever cable from the manual control lever.





6. Remove the 2 retaining bolts and position the selector lever cable and bracket aside.





7. Remove the selector lever cable retainer from the transmission fluid filler tube bracket.





8. Remove the starter motor.

9. NOTE: Transaxle removed for clarity.

Remove the 4 upper transaxle retaining bolts.





10. Install the Engine Lifting Bracket and the Universal Adapter Brackets on both cylinder heads.





11. Install the Engine Support Bar, Support Leg and Adapters.





12. Install the Engine Lifting Chain and Adapter and support the engine and transaxle.





13. Remove the LH support insulator through bolt.





14. Remove the 4 nuts and the support insulator bracket.





15. Remove the front wheels and tires.

16. Remove the 7 retainers and the LH splash shield.





17. Remove the 6 retainers and the RH splash shield.





18. Remove the LH front halfshaft and RH intermediate shaft.

AWD vehicles

19. NOTICE: Do not reuse the driveshaft flange bolts and washers. Install new bolts and washers or damage to the vehicle may occur.

NOTE: Index-mark the drive shaft flange and PTU flange for installation.

Remove and discard the 6 front driveshaft-to-PTU bolts and washers.
- Position the driveshaft aside and support with mechanic's wire.





All vehicles

20. Remove the 4 bolts and remove the cross brace.





21. Remove the lower front support insulator through bolt for the mount and the 2 bolts from the cross brace.





22. Remove and discard the nut and remove the rear cross brace.





23. Remove the lower support insulator.

1. Remove the lower support insulator through bolt.

2. Remove the lower support insulator bolt and 2 nuts.

3. Remove the lower support insulator.





24. NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, the transmission fluid will need to be drained.

Remove the drain plug and drain the transmission fluid.





25. Install the transmission fluid drain plug.
- Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).





26. Disconnect the LH Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS) electrical connector.





27. Disconnect the RH CMS electrical connector.





28. Remove and discard the 6 exhaust Y-pipe nuts and remove the Y-pipe.





AWD vehicles

29. Remove the 3 nuts and the RH catalytic converter.





30. Remove the bolts and the PTU support bracket.





31. Remove the bolts from the PTU.





32. Remove the bolt and remove the PTU.





All vehicles

33. Remove the 2 secondary latches from the transaxle fluid cooler tubes.





34. Using the Transmission Cooler Line Disconnect Tool, disconnect the 2 transaxle fluid cooler tubes (1 shown).





35. Disconnect the transaxle electrical connector.





36. Remove the transaxle electrical wiring harness retainers from the main control cover studbolts.





37. Disconnect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector.





38. NOTE: It is necessary to raise the engine a couple of inches in order to remove the transaxle.

Using the Engine Lifting Chain and Adapter, raise the front of the engine.





39. NOTE: It is necessary to lower the transaxle in order to clear the subframe to remove the transaxle.

Lower the transaxle enough to clear the frame using the Engine Lifting Chain and Adapter.





40. Remove the torque converter access cover.





41. Remove and discard the 4 torque converter nuts.





42. Support the transaxle with a high-lift jack.

43. Remove the 2 oil pan-to-transaxle bolts.





44. Remove the 2 nuts and the transaxle-to-engine stud.





45. Remove the bolt.





46. NOTICE: The torque converter is heavy. Install the Torque Converter Retainer before lowering the transaxle.

Move the transaxle back far enough to install the Torque Converter Retainer.





47. Lower the transaxle from the engine compartment.





48. If it is necessary to install a new transaxle, remove the mount bracket and reuse the 3 bolts and the mount bracket on the new transaxle.
