ISSUE
Some 2009-2010 Escape, Mariner, 2010 Fusion and Milan vehicles equipped with a 6F35 transmission, may exhibit a harsh 1-2 shift or 2-3 shift flare that occurs on the first couple shifts of the day, an intermittent harsh first engagement (primarily reverse, but occasionally drive) with no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Check and set fluid level at 85 °C (185 °F) to the top of the hash marks (normal fluid level). For vehicle that will be flat towed (recreation towing) set fluid level to flat tow section of dip stick. Fluid temperature must be 85 °C to 93 °C (185 °F to 200 °F) to check or set the level.
2. Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) to the latest calibration using Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) release 76.03 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the VCM 2011.11 DVD. Calibration files may also be obtained at the website.
NOTE
PLEASE ADVISE THE CUSTOMER THAT THIS VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH AN ADAPTIVE TRANSMISSION SHIFT STRATEGY WHICH ALLOWS THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER TO LEARN THE TRANSMISSION'S UNIQUE PARAMETERS AND IMPROVE SHIFT QUALITY. WHEN THE ADAPTIVE STRATEGY IS RESET, THE COMPUTER WILL BEGIN A RE-LEARNING PROCESS. THIS RE-LEARNING PROCESS MAY RESULT IN FIRMER THAN NORMAL UPSHIFTS AND DOWNSHIFTS FOR SEVERAL DAYS.
