COLD START FRONT END ACCESSORY DRIVE
(FEAD) WHINE / WHISTLE NOISE

FORD:
2009 Focus, Escape

MERCURY:
2009 Mariner

ISSUE
Some 2009 Focus vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine built from 8/15/2008, 2009 Escape and Mariner vehicles equipped with a 2.5L engine built from 10/27/2008 to 11/28/2008 may exhibit a front end accessory drive (FEAD) related high-pitched metallic whine / whistle noise. This noise may be caused by the idler pulley.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the
condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTE
FEAD IDLER PULLEY NOISE MAY BE MOST APPARENT BETWEEN 1100-1500 RPM, AND MAY BE MORE NOTICEABLE ON ENGINE DECELERATION FROM 1500 RPM. NOISE WILL BE ELIMINATED WITH FEAD BELT REMOVED.

Replace the accessory drive belt idler pulley. Reference Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-05.
