Pinpoint Test E: Incorrect Speedometer Indication
Normal Operation
The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) signal from the PCM for all vehicles except Hybrid and from the Transmission Control Module (TCM) for the Hybrid over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. The IC monitors the VSS input from the PCM or TCM and commands the speedometer with a corresponding movement of the pointer.
If the IC receives invalid vehicle speed data from the PCM or TCM for 5 seconds or less, the IC defaults the speedometer to the last setting, based upon the last known good vehicle speed message. If the IC does not receive the vehicle speed data from the PCM or the TCM, or if the data received is deemed invalid, the IC sets DTC U0100 (except Hybrid) or U0101 (Hybrid) in continuous memory and defaults the speedometer to 0 km/h (0 mph).
NOTE: If DTC U0100 is set in the IC, other observable symptoms may be an inoperative tachometer, temperature gauge (except Hybrid) or odometer.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Axle ratio configuration
- Tire size configuration
- PCM (except Hybrid)
- TCM (Hybrid only)
- IC
PINPOINT TEST E: INCORRECT SPEEDOMETER INDICATION
-------------------------------------------------
E1 CHECK FOR CORRECT AXLE RATIO AND TIRE SIZE CONFIGURATION
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Module Programming.
- Select programmable parameters and confirm that the axle ratio and the tire size are correctly configured.
- Are the axle ratio and tire size correctly configured?
Yes
GO to E2.
No
CONFIGURE the axle ratio or tire size as required. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
E2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IC DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC U0100, Go To Pinpoint Test AS. Pinpoint Tests AS: DTC U0100
For DTC U0101, Go To Pinpoint Test AT. Pinpoint Tests AT: DTC U0101
No
GO to E3.
-------------------------------------------------
E3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
- Are any PCM DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information.
No
GO to E4.
-------------------------------------------------
E4 CARRY OUT THE SPEEDOMETER ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger.
- Select the IC speedometer (SPDOMETER) active command. Command the speedometer in 10% increments while monitoring the speedometer. The speed indicated should increase in increments of approximately 20 km/h (12 mph) for each 10% change.
- Does the speed indicated increase within specifications?
Yes
GO to E5.
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
E5 CHECK THE VEHICLE SPEED INPUT USING THE IC DEALER TEST MODE
- Ignition ON.
- Enter Instrument Cluster (IC) Dealer Test Mode.
- NOTE: The display below uses xxx's to represent a numeric or alpha-numeric value. The value may display the same amount of characters represented by the xxx's or there may be more/less depending on the type of display. For example: Exxxx.x (base cluster) or SPEEDOMETER xxxx.x km/h (message center cluster) may display E45 or SPEEDOMETER 45 km/h. Note that there were 5 x's in the display description but only 2 digits in the actual display.
- Scroll down to Exxxx.x (base cluster) or SPEEDOMETER xxxx.x km/h (message center cluster).
- NOTE: This step may require the use of an assistant to monitor the vehicle speed input and the speedometer gauge indication.
- Drive the vehicle at various speeds while monitoring both the speedometer and the vehicle speed input in the dealer test mode.
- Does the vehicle speed input agree with the position of the speedometer indication?
Yes
GO to E6.
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
E6 MONITOR THE VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) PID
NOTE: Verify that the tire size matches the vehicles configured tire size.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: PCM DataLogger (Except Hybrid) or TCM DataLogger (Hybrid only).
- Select the vehicle speed (VSS) (except Hybrid) or (VSS_TCM) (Hybrid only) PID. Monitor the vehicle speed PID while driving the vehicle.
- Does the vehicle speed PID match the speedometer reading on the IC?
Yes
Except Hybrid, INSTALL a new PCM. TEST the system for normal operation.
Hybrid only, INSTALL a new transaxle. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
