Pinpoint Test Z: The Stability/Traction Control Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The stability/traction control indicator flashes when the vehicle stability/traction control is in active mode or is being controlled by the ABS module. The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the stability/traction control data from the ABS module over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. The IC monitors the stability/traction control message and when the ABS module detects a stability/traction control concern, the IC illuminates the stability/traction control indicator. If the stability/traction control message is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0121 (except Hybrid) or U0129 (Hybrid only) in continuous memory and defaults the stability/traction control indicator on.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Stability/traction control system concern
- ABS module
- IC
PINPOINT TEST Z: THE STABILITY/TRACTION CONTROL INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
-------------------------------------------------
Z1 CHECK THE STABILITY/TRACTION CONTROL INDICATOR OPERATION USING THE STABILITY/TRACTION CONTROL DISABLE SWITCH
- Ignition ON.
- Press the stability/traction control disable switch one time to disable the stability/traction control system then press the stability/traction control switch again while monitoring the stability/traction control indicator.
- Does the stability/traction control indicator illuminate with the first switch press and turn off with the second switch press?
Yes
If the stability/traction control indicator does not operate while in traction active mode, INSTALL a new ABS module. TEST the system for normal operation.
If the stability/traction control indicator operates in traction active mode, the system is operating normally at this time.
No
GO to Z2.
-------------------------------------------------
Z2 CARRY OUT THE IC INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger.
- Select the IC stability/traction control active indicator (ACTIVELMP) active command. Command the stability/traction control active indicator on and off. Observe the stability/traction control indicator.
- Does the stability/traction control indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?
Yes
GO to Z3.
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
Z3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE ABS MODULE SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded ABS module DTCs from the self-test.
- Are any ABS module DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Body Control Systems.
No
GO to Z4.
-------------------------------------------------
Z4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IC DTCs from the self-test.
- Is DTC U0121 (except Hybrid) or U1029 (Hybrid only) recorded?
Yes
GO to Z5.
No
INSTALL a new ABS module. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
Z5 CARRY OUT THE IC SELF-TEST
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC Self-Test.
- Clear the DTCs. Repeat the IC self-test.
- Is DTC U0121 or U0129 present?
Yes
For DTC U0121, Go To Pinpoint Test AW. Pinpoint Tests AW: DTC U0121
For DTC U0129, Go To Pinpoint Test AX. Pinpoint Tests AX: DTC U0129
No
VERIFY the stability/traction control indicator is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have resulted from an intermittent network concern.
