Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair



Removal
On Mustang SVO models, loosen and disconnect intercooler clamps from intercooler air ducts.
1. Drain cooling system, then remove air cleaner assembly.
2. Remove heater hose-to-rocker arm cover retaining screw.
3. Remove distributor cap and ignition wires.
4. Remove spark plugs.
5. Disconnect all vacuum hoses necessary for cylinder head removal.
6. Remove engine oil dipstick.
7. Remove rocker arm cover attaching bolts and the cover.
8. Remove intake manifold attaching bolts, then the intake manifold and carburetor as an assembly.
9. Remove alternator drive belt, then the alternator mounting bracket attaching bolts.
10. Removing timing belt cover attaching bolts and the cover.
11. Loosen cam idler attaching bolts. Move idler to the unloaded position and retighten attaching bolts.
12. Remove timing belt from camshaft and auxiliary sprockets.
13. Remove heat stove from exhaust manifold.
14. Remove exhaust manifold, then the timing belt idler and two bracket bolts.
15. Remove timing belt idler spring stop from cylinder head, then disconnect oil sending unit electrical connector.
16. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts and the cylinder head.

Intake manifold tightening sequence. Except EFI models:






Installation
Reverse procedure to install with the following notes:
1. To prevent valve damage, when installing cylinder head, position camshaft in the 5 o'clock position, as shown in figure, allowing minimum protrusion of valves from cylinder head.
2. Torque cylinder head bolts in sequence, as shown in figure, in two steps:
^ 60-81 N.m (50-60 lb-ft),
^ then 108-122 N.m (80-90 lb-ft).
3. Torque intake manifold attaching bolts in sequence, as shown in figure, in two steps:
^ 7-9 N.m (5-7 lb-ft)
^ then 19-28 N.m (14-21 lb-ft)
