High altitude compensator assemblies (EZ1Z-9A950-A) are no longer available for service. Two new service kits (1.6L: E6PZ-9A950-B, and 2.3L/3.8L: E6PZ-9A950-A) have replaced the old high altitude compensator assemblies. Based on vehicle application and calibration, use one of the following procedures for installation.

1981-82 1.6L-2V Installation Procedure:

NOTE: The procedure is the same as the 1982 1.6L- 2V Escort/Lynx, EXP/LN7 with the exception that there is only one fitting on the carburetor instead of three. For this application, the remaining two lines should be removed from the harness and the nipples capped.

1. Remove the old altitude compensator, bracket and hose harness assembly.

2. Drill a 7 mm hole 65 mm to the left of the existing inboard hole for mounting the new altitude compensator to the bulkhead.

3. Plug the old outboard hole in the bulkhead.

4. Install the new altitude compensator.

Figure 7:

5. Install the new harness assemblies to the new altitude compensator, carburetor, air cleaner and the vacuum tree (see Figure 7).

6. Cap the "tee" on the vacuum harness if the added connection is not required.
1982 2.3L Installation Procedure:

1. Remove the altitude compensator from the left apron.

2. Drill a 7 mm hole 65 mm to the rear of the front mounting hole. The new hole should be placed so that the compensator will mount vertically with the 1/4 inch nipple on top.

3. Install the compensator using the two nuts.

Figure 8:

4. Remove the 3/8 inch hose to the connector block and install it to the center part of the altitude compensator (see Figure 8).

5. Cut 44 inches of 1/4 inch vacuum line (using stock line available) and attach one end to the 1/4 inch nipple on the altitude compensator and the other to the colored end of one of the check valves.
6. Cut a 2-inch long 1/4 inch vacuum line and install it on the black end of the check valve, then attach that to the vacuum tree.

7. Cut a 12-inch long 3/8 inch vacuum hose and attach one end to the remaining 3/8 inch nipple on the altitude compensator. At the end of the tee (3/8 inch nipple), cut and install a 1-1/2 inch length 3/8 inch vacuum hose, then install another tee so that both tees are in line and the 1/4 inch legs of the tees are pointing toward the carburetor.

8. Cut two 1-1/2 inch length of 1/4 inch vacuum hose and install them on the 1/4 inch outlets of the tees. Next, install one check valve (colored end) to each one of the 1-1/2 inch length of hose.

9. Cut the two hoses in the OEM harness that lead to the carburetor and connect them to the black side of the two check valves; discard the remaining hose.

10. Cut a 1-1/2 inch length of 3/8 inch vacuum hose and attach it to the open 3/8 inch nipple of the last tee. To that attach the (3/8 x 1/4) connector.

11. Cut the line going to the PVC system and connect it to the connector and discard the remaining harness.

1982 3.8L Installation Procedure:

1. Remove the altitude compensator from the left apron.

2. Drill a 7 mm hole 65 mm to the rear of the front mounting hole. The new hole will be located so that the new altitude compensator will mount vertically with the 1/4 inch nipple at the top.

3. Install the new compensator using the two nuts.

4. Remove the 3/8 inch line from the old compensator and install it to the center of the new compensator.

5. Cut a 48 inch length of 1/4 inch vacuum line (using stock line available) and attach one end to the 1/4 inch nipple of the compensator.

6. Install the colored end of one check valve to the other end of the 1/4 x 48 inch vacuum hose.

7. Cut a 2-inch length of 3/8 inch vacuum line and install one end to the black end of the check valve, then connect the other end to an open fitting on the vacuum tree.

Figure 9:

8. Cut a 31-inch length of 3/8 inch vacuum line and install one end to the remaining 3/8 inch nipple on the altitude compensator and the other end to a tee. Cut a 1-1/2 inch of 3/8 inch vacuum line and install the other tee in line with the first tee (see Figure 9). Cap the open 3/8 inch nipple on the second tee.

9. Cut two pieces of 1/4 inch vacuum line 1-1/2 inch long, install these to the two 1/4 inch nipples of the two tees and connect these to the colored end of the two check valves.

10. Cut the two 1/4 inch hoses going to the carburetor and connect them to the black ends of the two check valves.
