RACK YOKE BEARING PRELOAD ADJUSTMENTS

Fig. 2 Yoke plug locknut removal & installation. Capri, Fairmont, Mustang & Zephyr:

The steering gear must be removed from the vehicle to perform this adjustment.
1. Drain power steering fluid from power cylinder by removing external pressure lines from gear and allowing fluid to drain from openings.
2. Position steering gear on bench holding fixture T57L-500-B, or equivalent
3. Position tool No. T-74P-3504-R, or equivalent, and an inch lb. torque wrench on input shaft splines.
4. Using tool No. T74P-3504-U, or equivalent, loosen yoke plug locknut, Fig. 2.
5. Place tool No. T-77P-3504-A, OE equivalent, with an inch lb. torque wrench into slots on yoke plug.
6. With rack located at center of travel position, tighten yoke plug using torque wrench and tool to a torque of 45 to 50 in. lbs. on except Mustang SVO or 30 to 60 in. lbs. on Mustang SVO. Ensure that threads on yoke plug are clean and not corroded prior to torquing.
7. Back off yoke plug, maximum 45 degrees, until the torque required to initiate and sustain rotation of input shaft is 7 to 15 in. lbs. on except Mustang SVO or {7-18} in. lbs. on Mustang SVO. Input torque should be checked with steering gear in a horizontal position so that weight rack does not affect reading.
8. While holding yoke plug with a wrench, tighten yoke plug locknut to a torque of 44 to 66 ft.-lbs. using tool No. T74P-3504-U, or equivalent. Ensure yoke plug does not move while tightening locknut. Recheck input shaft rotation torque after tightening locknut.
9. Remove tools from steering gear, then install external pressure lines. Torque line fittings to 10 to 15 ft. lbs.
