This article releases a revised rear output shaft and parking gear with instructions/procedures to service C5 transmissions.

C5 transmissions built after March 1983 will not have the rear output shaft retaining ring groove. TSB article 82-13-8, dated July 1, 1982, informed the field that the retaining ring was removed but the groove in the output shaft would remain. To accomodate for the retaining ring removal, a new, wider parking gear and a shoulder on the output shaft was incorporated. TSB article 82-13-8 also informed the field that the original parking gear and retaining ring was to be used for service replacement since the ring groove in the output shaft was retained.

However, the removal of the retaining ring groove on the output shaft occurred after March 1983 now uses the new, wider parking gear if service replacement becomes necessary for models built after March 1983.

For models built prior to March 1983, the old park gear and retaining ring will continue to be used. Also, the output shaft with the retaining ring groove will be continued for service. Refer to Figures 5 and 6 for clarification of service part compatibility.
