Engine: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove hood.
3. Drain cooling system and oil pan.
4. Remove air cleaner and intake duct assembly.
5. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses, then remove all drive belts.
6. If equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect transmission oil cooler lines from radiator.
7. On all models, remove fan shroud attaching bolts, then the radiator, fan, spacer, pulley and shroud.
8. Remove alternator mounting bolts and position alternator aside with wiring attached.
9. Disconnect oil pressure and water temperature wiring from sending units, then the accelerator cable from carburetor or throttle body.
10. Disconnect and plug fuel pump inlet line.
11. If equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect throttle valve vacuum line from intake manifold. Disconnect manual shift rod and the retracting spring at shift rod stud. Disconnect transmission filler tube bracket from engine block.
12. If equipped with Thermactor system, remove or disconnect components that may interfere with engine replacement.
13. If equipped with A/C, isolate and remove compressor.
14. If equipped with power steering, disconnect pump bracket from cylinder head and position assembly aside.
15. If equipped with power brakes, disconnect brake vacuum line from intake manifold.
16. On all models, remove flywheel or converter housing upper attaching bolts.
17. Disconnect ignition coil wiring.
18. On models equipped with EEC IV system, disconnect air charge temperature sensor, engine coolant temperature sensor and exhaust gas oxygen sensor electrical connectors.
19. On all models, disconnect wiring harness from left side rocker arm cover and position aside. Disconnect ground strap from engine block.
20. Raise front of vehicle. Disconnect starter wiring, then remove starter motor.
21. Disconnect exhaust pipes from manifolds.
22. Disconnect engine mounts from brackets on frame.
23. If equipped with manual transmission, remove bolts attaching clutch equalizer bar to frame rail, then the equalizer from engine block. Remove remaining flywheel housing to engine bolts.
24. If equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect transmission oil cooler lines from retainer and remove converter housing inspection cover. Remove converter to flywheel bolts and secure converter in housing. Remove remaining converter housing to engine bolts.
25. On all models, lower vehicle and support transmission with a suitable jack.
26. Attach suitable engine lifting equipment to engine.
27. Lift engine slightly and pull forward to disengage from transmission, then remove engine from vehicle.
28. Reverse procedure to install.
