SHEET METAL - HOOD PALM DENTS
- SERVICE PROCEDURE

FORD 1982-83 MUSTANG

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1982-83 CAPRI

Hood panels may dent from hand palm pressure when closing the hood when the latch is on the safety catch position. To prevent reoccurrence of denting after normal service to remove the dents the hood may be reinforced by "Super Panel Filler" as outlined in the procedure that follows. In production a conventional reinforcement was added to the powerdome area of the hood on 5/15/83.

1. Obtain one bag of 3M Brand Super Panel Filler (05930) for each hood to be serviced, and a common household cellulose sponge (approximate size 7-3/4" x 4-1/4" x 1-5/8") to be used as a dam. The sponge can be reused for several cars.
2. With hood removed from car and dents serviced, place hood on a suitable bench with the inner panel facing up and the rear elevated approximately 10 inches.
3. Remove the pop up spring and auxiliary hood catch from hood.

Figure 3:

4. Cut the sponge to approximately 7-3/4" x 2-1/8" x 1-5/8" and wrap it with a suitable plastic material such as a customer parts return bag or household wrap (Figure 3, View A).

NOTE: The sponge is used as a dam to prevent the Super Panel Filler from reaching the area where the pop up spring must be reinstalled. Failure to wrap it with plastic will make it extremely difficult to remove when the filler expands and hardens.

5. Insert the wrapped sponge into the hood latch hole and direct it to the left side until it reaches the pop up spring "U" nut (Figure 3, View B).
6. Install the pop up spring and hood catch attaching bolts into the "U" nuts. Do Not install the spring and catch at this time (Figure 3, View B).
7. Follow all instructions and cautions on the Super Panel Filler bag and prepare the filler for use.
8. Squeeze the contents of the bag into the four holes in the hood as shown in Figure 3, View C. Use the entire bag, keeping the amount as equal as possible in each hole.
9. Allow a mimimum of 20 minutes for the material to expand and harden.

Figure 4:

10. Remove the sponge and excess filler which may have expanded through holes as shown in Figure 4.
11. Reinstall the pop up spring and auxiliary hood catch.
12. Reinstall the hood on the car.
13. Function the hood and latch to assure the filler material is not interfering with the latch operation.
