CLUTCH - ADDITIONAL SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS FOR CLUTCH PEDAL QUADRANT AND PAWL
FORD 1981-83 FAIRMONT, MUSTANG, LTD; 1983 T-BIRD
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1981-83 ZEPHYR, CAPRI, MARQUIS
In the event the self-adjusting clutch pawl or quadrant requires replacement, the clutch pedal shaft assembly and the clutch cable should be checked for proper function as follows:
Figure 11:
Clutch Pedal Shaft Assembly
When the pawl and quadrant have been re-assembled on the shaft assembly, verify the pawl teeth are in full contact with the quadrant teeth on both sides of the groove in the quadrant. If the pawl teeth contact the quadrant teeth only on the side nearest the lever, the lever is bent and the shaft assembly should be replaced (Figure 11).
Clutch Cable Assembly
Before re-installing clutch cable inner wire into the quadrant, the following steps should be taken.
All Engines Except 2.3L EFI Turbo
Remove dust shield from flywheel housing, remove clutch cable inner wire ball end from the release lever and move the release lever to its rearmost position. Slide clutch cable inner wire back and forth from either the flywheel housing or quadrant end. The inner cable must slide freely and smoothly with no binding or it should be replaced.
2.3L EFI Turbo Engine
Remove the cable inner wire and clevis from the relay lever on the flywheel housing. From the quadrant end, slide the inner cable back and forth. The inner cable must slide freely and smoothly with no binding or it should be replaced. If the cable inner wire is moved more than one inch, the inner cable may slide within the accordian boot seal at the flywheel housing and give a false impression of a defective cable.
