FRONT SEATS LOOSE/ROCKING - FLOOR PAN CRACKS - NEW FLOOR PAN REINFORCEMENT AVAILABLE

FORD 1979-83 MUSTANG

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1979-83 CAPRI

NOTE: This article is being republished in its entirety to notify field technicians that the service part for the passenger side has been released for service.

This article supersedes TSB articles 86-18-1, 84-3-4, 84-3-45, and 83-14-2.

Front driver and passenger seats may feel loose or rock (side-to-side) due to floor pan fatigue cracks at the rear seat track attachments. This can be corrected by installing floor pan reinforcement panels.

The size and length of the fatigue cracks will determine which of the procedures will be followed. The technician should read and understand this complete article prior to beginning the inspection or repair procedures.

Inspection Procedure

Two separate repair procedures are used, "A" and "B". Follow the inspection procedure to determine which repair, "A" or "B" is to be used.

NOTE: Part number E5ZZ-6111248-A (driver's side) and E5ZZ-6111248-B (passenger's side) must be used to perform the inspection.

1. Raise the vehicle on hoist.

2. Locate the rear seat track attachment for the seats and inspect for cracks. Use a wire brush to clean the surface to locate any hairline cracks.

NOTE: If no cracks are found, the technician should refer to Car Shop Manual, Section 41-01 for further diagnosis of the seat rocking condition.

Figure 1:

3. Position and hold reinforcement against the floor pan's underside as shown in Figure 1. Check to see if the reinforcement covers all the cracks. If the reinforcement covers all the cracks, the technician should use Repair Procedure "A". If the reinforcement does not cover all the cracks, the technician should use Repair Procedure "B".

REPAIR PROCEDURE "A" (Use of safety stands is recommended)

1. Refer to the Parts List for Procedure "A" and obtain all the parts. (See page 16).

Figure 2:

2. Apply Super Seal Anti-Corrosion Compound (D8AZ-19515-B) to the underside of floor pan area shown in Figure 2.

Figure 3:

3. Clamp the reinforcement to the rocker panel as shown in Figure 3. It may be necessary to remove the caulk along the sidemember (rocker panel) to provide a good fit of the reinforcement. It may also be necessary to hammer form the reinforcement for a tight fit.

4. Using a No. 11 drill and the holes on the downward flange as a guide, drill through the sidemember (rocker panel) as shown in Figure 3.

Figure 4:

5. Install pop rivets using Rotunda Blind Fastener Installation Tool Model 107-00600 in each of the drilled holes as shown in Figure 4.

Figure 5:

6. Using an adjustable drill stop, set the drill stop to a 1/2 inch depth. See Figure 5 for set up.

Figure 6:

CAUTION: The depth stop MUST NOT exceed 1/2 inch, as damage to the carpet (or top side reinforcement in Procedure "B" will occur).

7. Drill only the first row of holes, (5, 6, 7, and 8) starting at the front of the reinforcement and continue drilling to the rear. See Figure 6 for drilling sequence.

8. Install pop rivets (383798-S7-8) using Rotunda Blind Fastener Installation Tool 107-00600 in each of the drilled holes - 5,6,7, and 8. If is important to remove the carpet backing (jute) from the drilled hole prior to rivet installation.

9. Continue the drilling and riveting for each row until the reinforcement is fully attached. Do not drill or rivet drain holes (shown in Figure 6).

Figure 7:

10. Apply a continuous bead of 3M Joint and Seam Sealer (051135-08648) along the edge of the reinforcement and the underbody. See Figure 7.

11. Apply Super Seal Anti-Corrosion Compound to entire repair area including the rivet heads on rocker panel.

12. Repeat Steps 2 through 11 on the passenger side, if required, with part number (E5ZZ-6111248-B).

REPAIR PROCEDURE "B" (Use of safety stands is recommended)

1. Refer to the Parts List for Procedure "B" and obtain all necessary parts. (See Page 17)

2. Remove driver's seat and track assembly. See Car Shop Manual, Section 41-01 for procedure.

3. Remove the driver's side seat belt, carpet, floor sound deadener, rear seat cushion and any floor wiring in the area of the seat track attachments.

4. If any cracks are noted at the front track attachments, 1/8 inch holes should be drilled at the end of each crack and the crack should be mig-welded. District Office approval is required prior to performing this step.

WARNING: THE FUEL TANK AND LINES MUST BE REMOVED AND PLUGGED PRIOR TO WELDING TO AVOID PERSONAL INJURY OR VEHICLE DAMAGE.

5. Apply 3M Joint and Seam Sealer (051135-08648) to all cracks prior to top side reinforcement installation.

Figure 8:

6. Position the top side reinforcement (E5ZZ- 61111A45-A or E5ZZ-66111A45-A) as shown in Figure 8, and hammer form as necessary to provide a tight fit.

CAUTION: Prior to drilling any holes, the fuel lines must be moved out of the way.

7. Starting at the rocker panel using a No. 11 size drill and using the reinforcement as a guide, drill the five rocker panel attachment holes. Install rivets in these five holes (382602-S100).

8. On floor pan drilling: Drill only two holes at a time followed by installing a rivet (382602-S1001) in each hole. Continue this process until the reinforcement is fully installed.

9. Raise vehicle on hoist and check that all rivets are properly seated. If a rivet is bad, drill it out and install a new rivet.

10. To install the lower reinforcement (E5ZZ-6111248- A), refer to Procedure "A", Steps 2 through 11, and return to Step 11 of this procedure when "A" is completed.

11. Install floor wiring, floor sound deadener, carpet, rear seat cushion and seat belts.

NOTE: Torque seat belt bolts to 22-32 ft.lbs. (30-44 N-m).

12. Install seat and seat track assembly and torque floor pan attachments to 18-32 ft.lbs. (25-44 N-m).

13. Check seat tracks and seat belts for proper operation.
