Vehicle Damage Warnings
CAUTION: Use of any other than the approved DOT-3 brake fluid will cause permanent damage to brake components and will render the brakes inoperative.NOTE: Prior to performing any diagnosis, make sure the
brake system warning indicator is functional.
1. Grease or any other foreign material must be kept off lining surfaces and braking surfaces of disc brake rotor and external surfaces of wheel hub during service operation. In handling the disc brake rotor and disc brake caliper assemblies, avoid deformation of disc brake rotor and nicking or scratching of brake shoes and linings (2001).
2. If a caliper piston is removed for any reason, the piston seals and dust boot must be replaced. Exercise care not to damage the caliper piston by protecting it from contact with any metal or sharp objects.
3. During removal and installation of a wheel assembly, exercise care not to interfere with and damage disc brake rotor shield or bleeder screw fitting.
4. Wheel bearing endplay is critical and must be within specification (zero end play).
5. Do not attempt to clean or restore any oil or grease-soaked brake shoes and linings. When contaminated linings are found, brake shoes and linings must be replaced in complete axle sets and the rotor braking surfaces, washed clean.
6. When replacing brake drum or disc brake rotor after either machining or new part replacement, make sure hub surface is clean and free of contaminants before installation.
7. Calipers must be installed with bleeder screws in upward position for proper bleeding of air from brake system.
8. After any service, pump the service brake pedal to obtain a firm brake pedal before moving the vehicle.
CLEANING BRAKE PARTS
CAUTION: Do not use denatured alcohol for flushing the system or cleaning assemblies where alcohol could be trapped and cause eventual failure of rubber components in the system.
- Denatured alcohol is acceptable for cleaning parts, provided the parts are completely air-dried and coated with brake fluid before installation.
- To remove brake fluid contamination, clean all parts with denatured alcohol.
- Do not attempt to clean contaminated linings. Contaminated brake linings must be replaced.
ROTOR HANDLING
- Mark rotor and one wheel stud with touch-up paint, if rotor is to be reinstalled. Be sure to re-index marked rotor. This will limit the on vehicle runout.
- If excessive force must be used during front disc brake rotor removal, the front disc brake rotor should be checked for runout prior to installation.
- Apply a small amount of Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound to pilot diameter of front disc brake rotor to ease future removal.
- Grease or any other foreign material must be kept off braking surfaces of disc brake rotor and external surfaces of wheel hub during service operation.
- In handling the disc brake rotor avoid deformation of disc brake rotor.
