Spark Knock During Acceleration - Cold
Ford

Excessive spark knock during acceleration while the engine is cold (0-2 miles after start-up), may be caused by a vacuum regulator valve filter. If the filter on the lower port of the vacuum regulator valve -9F490- becomes plugged, full manifold vacuum will develop at the distributor rather than the regulated 6" vacuum.
To Service this condition:
1. Remove the vacuum check valve (VCKV) from the line to the top port of the vacuum regulator valve (VRV) and insert a straight connector (383003-S).
Figure 13:
2. Cut the line from the middle port of the VRV and install the vacuum check valve removed in Step 1 (with orientation reversed) a short length of 5/32" vacuum hose and a 3-way tee (373846-S) (Figure 13).
3. Remove and discard the filter from the bottom port of the VRV and install a 5/32" vacuum hose from the VRV to the 3-way tee installed in Step # 2.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and alterations performed as shown. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
