Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
Fig. 4 Cylinder Head Tightening Sequence:
Tighten cylinder head bolts a little at a time in three steps in the sequence shown in Fig. 2. Final tightening should be to the torque specifications listed in the ``Engine Tightening'' table. After bolts have been tightened to specifications, they should not be disturbed.

1982---88 V8-255 & 302
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove intake manifold as an assembly.
3. Remove rocker arm cover.
4. If left cylinder head is being removed, isolate and remove A/C compressor, if equipped.
5. Remove EGR cooler, if equipped.
6. If left cylinder head is being removed, disconnect power steering pump bracket from cylinder head and engine block and position assembly aside.
7. Remove Thermactor crossover tube from rear of cylinder heads.
8. If right cylinder head is being removed, remove alternator bracket bolt and spacer and, if equipped, the A/C compressor mounting bracket.
9. Loosen rocker arm stud nuts or bolts so that rocker arms can be rotated to the side.
10. Remove pushrods, keeping them in sequence so they may be returned to their original locations. Remove exhaust valve stem caps.
11. Disconnect exhaust pipes from exhaust manifold.
12. Unfasten and remove cylinder head.
13. Reverse removal procedure to install the head. Tighten cylinder head down in the sequence shown in Fig. 2. When installing intake manifold refer to Fig. 3 for bolt tightening sequence.
When installing intake manifold, a 1-8 inch bead of RTV sealer should be applied at mating surfaces of intake manifold, cylinder head and cylinder block, Fig. 4. After intake manifold seals and gaskets have been positioned, apply a 1-16 inch bead of RTV sealer to the outer end of each intake manifold seal for the entire width of the seal, Fig. 4. On V8-302 engines equipped with cork intake manifold seals, both the front and rear seals should be replaced with RTV sealer. Apply a 1-4 inch bead of sealer to front and rear sealing surfaces of engine block.
