FLYWHEEL HOUSING - REVISED SERVICE PROCEDURE FOR INSPECTION AND ALIGNMENT

FORD 1983 MUSTANG, T-BIRD

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983 CAPRI

This article revises the current 1983 Car Shop Manual service procedure for flywheel housing inspection and alignment.

With incorporation of the "Multi-Stage" clutch disc, estimated March, 1983, a new tool and revised procedure for checking flywheel housing face and bore runout is required. The current method of locating in the I.D. of the clutch disc hub, using alignment tool post assembly (Tool T75L-6392-L or equivalent) is not recommended for "Multi-Stage" clutch disc applications. The design of the "Multi-Stage" disc allows for movement in the area of the hub. Therefore, using the I.D. of the hub as a mounting location will result in erratic dial indicator readings.
The alignment procedure in the Car Shop Manual, Volume D, Section 16-01 is unchanged except for Step
4. The revised procedure for this step is as follows:

FIGURE 16:

4. Install alignment tool D83P-6392-A or equivalent with dial indicator post attached (Figure 15) through the flywheel housing bore and onto the pressure plate fingers. The oblong washer is to be forward of the pressure plate fingers while the round washer will remain on the rearward side with the tabs contacting the fingers. Tighten the nut on the end of the post assembly until the washers grip the pressure plate fingers tightly (Figure 16).

Up, down or side movement of the post assembly must not be evident during the bore and runout test procedure. If any movement is detectable, loosen the nut and rotate the post assembly to gain better mounting location on the pressure plate fingers, otherwise erratic reading will result.
