Vehicles which have a loss of Power on acceleration and/or an intermittent power loss (not on every accel), may need to have the processor replaced because of a poor internal connection. The connection is on the "Knock Sensor" circuitry which causes the processor to retard timing on acceleration. This condition may be more evident in warm ambient temperatures and the customer may also note a drop in fuel economy.
NOTE: 1985 production/service and 1983-84 service processers are suspect. (Check processor build dates in Step 3.)
Perform the following procedure:
1. Perform EEC IV Quick Test. If service codes are present, follow appropriate diagnostic procedures.
2. If Quick Test exhibits a pass (code 11) and condition still exists, introduce a fault by disconnecting the Knock Sensor. Rerun the Quick Test.
* If self-test passes knock test (no service code 25) replace ECA.
* If self-test fails knock test (service code 25 appears), ECA is O.K.
* Reconnect Knock Sensor.
3. If the vehicle passes the above test and the concern has been confirmed as intermittent, then and ONLY then replace the ECA if the date code printed on the ECA connector is one of the following:
4J 4K 4L 4M or 5A
DO NOT replace the ECA if the date code is not one of those shown above.
