Accessory drive belt squeal, rumble or chirp noise on vehicles equipped with a 3.8L engine may be caused by the power steering pump pulley being misaligned with the water pump pulley, belt interference with the alternator bracket, or the belt having low tension.
Check belt tension. If tension is below 80 lbs., adjust the tension to reset limits of 130-160 lbs. If insufficient travel prohibits the desired belt tension, move the hold down bolts to the lower threaded holes in the rear plate. Then, adjust the jack screw to the correct tension and secure the hold down bolts.
FIGURE 14:
Start the engine and if noise is still evident, observe tracking of the belt for proper alignment on the water pump pulley from the power steering pump pulley, and also observe for alternator bracket contact at the area adjacent to the alternator pivot bolt as shown in Figure 14.
If the belt does not align and track correctly on the water pump pulley, install steering pump pulley tool T75L- 3733-A to the steering pump pulley and adjust in the direction required to correct the alignment with the water pump pulley.

FIGURE 15:
If the drive belt is contacting the corner of the alternator bracket adjacent to the pivot bolt as shown in Figure 14, remove the drive belt and rework the corner of the bracket by filing or grinding the surface as shown in Figure 15.
Clearance between the belt and the bracket should be .12 inch minimum.
