This article supersedes TSB 84-16-16. The above drive concerns can be caused by oil ash deposits on the spark plug tips caused by oil leakage past the valve stem seals. When diagnosing these concerns, check spark plugs for oil ash deposits and for oil fouling, and, if present, replace the intake valve oil seals as follows:

1. Remove the valve covers.

2. Remove the rocker arm, key, retainer and valve spring from the intake valve only.

3. Remove and discard the umbrella shaped valve stem seal from the intake valve.

4. Install the new seal over the intake valve stem and onto the valve guide. Be sure the seal is fully seated.

5. Spark plugs that are oil fouled or exhibit oil ash deposits should be replaced.
