IDLE STALLS - 5.0L - EGR VALVE STUCK OPEN
FORD 1983-85 LTD, CROWN VICTORIA, MUSTANG, THUNDERBIRD
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983-85 MARQUIS, GRAND MARQUIS, CAPRI, COUGAR, CONTINENTAL, MARK VII, LINCOLN TOWN CAR
CALIBRATIONS: All with 5.0L EEC III and IV
Carbon build-up in the pintle area of the EGR valve causes the pintle to "stick" open. This could result in engine stalls during deceleration and/or at idle. This article describes how to test the EGR valve and how to remove the EGR cooler.
1. Perform EEC self-test. Verify all codes and service as necessary.
2. If cause of concern was not identified and eliminated, proceed to Step 13.
5.0L APPLICATION/CALIBRATION:
3. If calibration number is on application chart, proceed to Step 4.
If the calibration number is not on the application chart, clean pintle, but do not remove the EGR cooler.
4. Remove EGR valve and use a hand vacuum pump to apply vacuum to EGR valve. Remove carbon deposit from pintle and pintle seat area, by use of a suitable tool and compressed air. If pintle and pintle seat appear to be damaged, or carbon deposits cannot be removed, replace EGR valve.
5. Remove and discard EGR cooler assembly and hoses; refer to procedure in Car Shop Manual.
6. Visually inspect EGR spacer and intake manifold passage for carbon deposits. With EGR valve removed, start engine and run approximately 30 seconds to "blow-out" loose carbon deposits. If deposits are still present and are 1/32 inch thick or more, remove spacer and/or intake manifold as required and clean. (Refer to Car Shop Manual for removal procedure.)
FIGURE 22:
7. Remove existing EGR mounting studs and replace with two new studs. New studs will allow installation of EGR valve without cooler assembly. See Figure 22.
8. Install new gasket, new EGR valve and attaching nuts. Torque nuts to 12-18 ft. lbs.; reconnect EGR vacuum hoses.
9. Remove EGR water inlet connector in intake manifold and install pipe plug with sealant. Torque plug to 12-21 ft. lbs.
10. Install cap on 3-way tee where EGR cooler outlet hose was connected. Secure cap with new clamp.
11. Start engine and check for coolant, exhaust and vacuum leaks.
12. Test drive vehicle to ensure detonation does not exist. If unacceptable detonation occurs, retard ignition timing in 2~ increments to a maximum of 6~ retard from specification. Refer to Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal for ignition timing specification and Car Shop Manual for procedure.
13. Obtain and install a Ford Authorized Modification Decal denoting the above modification.
