CALIBRATIONS: 3-21 A-R3, 3-21 A-R14
Hard starting/choke loading can be serviced by spraying choke cleaner on the choke housing shaft/high cam bushing and replacing the choke cap.
Hard Starting
1. Remove the air cleaner assembly and set aside.
2. With engine at idle, spray Ford automatic choke cleaner D8AZ-19A501-A on the choke housing shaft from the back side of the choke housing, high cam bushing area.
3. With engine "OFF", manually cycle the choke plate several times. Restart the engine and repeat Step #2.
4. Install the air cleaner assembly.
Choke Loading
1. Remove the choke cap as outlined in the 1983 Car (Powertrain) Shop Manual, Section 24-28-9 and 10.
2. Thoroughly clean the choke linkage, choke housing shaft and choke pulldown piston and link with Ford automatic choke cleaner D8AZ-19A501-A and compressed air.
3. Assure absolute freedom of movement and alignment of the choke housing internal mechanism by manually cycling several times. Areas of concern may occur at:
a) Choke lever to piston rod pin.
FIGURE 13:
b) Choke piston rod to piston. The piston rod has a ball permanently attached to the rod. This ball must be located so as the ball seals the hole in the top of the piston, with the piston at the upper position. Refer to Figure 13 to identify proper alignment. If the piston rod ball to piston is misaligned, proceed to Step 4; if alignment is correct, proceed to Step 5.
4. Install a new choke housing assembly 9849.
NOTE: Prior to installing the choke housing assembly, verify that the new housing has correct alignment.
a) Remove the choke rod retaining clip.
b) Remove the hot air choke supply tube fitting.
c) Remove the three choke housing retaining screws.
d) Remove the choke housing assembly.
e) Position a new gasket 9853 on the new choke housing assembly.
f) Position the new housing on the carburetor assembly with the fast idle cam rotated counterclockwise, engage the choke rod to the choke housing shaft lever.
g) Install the three choke housing retaining screws.
h) Install the choke rod retaining clip and hot air supply tube fitting.
i) Perform the choke pulldown procedure as outlined in the 1983 Engine Emissions Diagnosis Manual. The specification is .205 +/- .010.
5. Install new choke cap No. 9848 and choke cap gasket 9871 as outlined in the 1983 Car (Powertrain) Shop Manual, Section 24-28-10.
NOTE: The new choke cap differs from the original in that the temperature switch feature has been eliminated, resulting In both heating elements on continually.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
