LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983 COUGAR

Some vehicles built prior to June 30, 1983, equipped with electronic instrument cluster may exhibit a squeak noise between the instrument panel and electronic cluster. To verify the concern, depress the top center of the instrument panel above the cluster assembly and listen for a squeak. To eliminate this concern, the following procedure should be followed.

1. Remove the lower instrument panel trim cover.
2. Remove the steering column cover.
3. Remove the instrument cluster trim panel.
4. Remove the instrument cluster from instrument panel and vehicle.

5. Apply a 3" x 1" strip of EXB-M99J291-A urethane tape (or equivalent) to the top of the cluster as shown in Figure 1.
6. Install the instrument cluster to instrument panel.
7. Install the instrument cluster trim panel.
8. Install the steering column cover.
9. Install the lower instrument panel trim cover.
