GAUGE - FUEL LEVEL FLUCTUATION WHILE DRIVING
FORD 1983 T-BIRD - TURBO OR CFI VEHICLES
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983 COUGAR
Fluctuating fuel level indications while driving may be caused by the fuel pump reservoir in the fuel tank emptying on turns, acceleration, or braking when the fuel tank contains 1/2 or less of fuel. The time delay in refilling the reservoir causes the fuel gauge to indicate less than actual level for a short period of time.
The 1984 fuel tanks on fuel injected vehicles have large refill ports which minimize fuel gauge level fluctuations. To service a 1983 vehicle with fluctuating fuel gauge resulting from slow reservoir refill will require replacing the fuel tank with a 1984 fuel tank. Refer to Shop Manual, Section 33-20-1 for normal fuel indicating system diagnosis.
