FORD 1983-1/2 T-BIRD - 2.3L T EFI, 5.0L CFI

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983-1/2 COUGAR - 5.0L CFI

A fuel sender filter on CFI vehicles, that is mispositioned or bent upward may cause an inaccurate fuel level indication at empty. A replacement filter is now available for the following applications:

Vehicle Application

T-Bird 2.3 TC EFI, 18 Gallon Tank

T-Bird/Cougar All CFI, 21 Gallon Tank

T-Bird/Cougar All CFI, 21 Gallon Tank
Electronic Cluster


Service Procedure

1. Refer to Shop Manual Section (33-20) for fuel sender removal.
2. After removing fuel sender from fuel tank, verify that filter is bent upward, interfering with float movement.
3. Grasp sender firmly at pump and pull filter off pump using a twisting, pulling motion.

4. Push on new service filter and carefully index to proper position (Figure 17).
5. Reinstall fuel sender into tank taking care not to bend or misalign filter.
6. Reinstall tank per Shop Manual Section (33-20).
7. Check fuel gauge (at instrument cluster) before adding any fuel - gauge should read empty.
